Fix to “ Installation Failed. The Google Chrome Installer failed to Start”

by Venkat eswarlu on August 13, 2012

in Google Chrome,Troubleshooting

One bad day this can happen to you: when you try to install Chrome after downloading its setup file, you’ll get a dialog from Google Chrome Installer with the message “ Installation failed. The Google Chrome installer failed to Start”. What you need to do to install your favorite browser again?, Here is the article that offers fix for the issue.

Fix Chrome’s ‘Update failed (error: 7),.. Error code=0×00000000′

The fix involves editing registry, so if you’re unaware of registry editing take the help of other advanced users near you.

Google chrome installer installation failed thumb Fix to “ Installation Failed. The Google Chrome Installer failed to Start”

1. Open registry editor by typing regedit in the run command

2. Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE \Google\Update\Clients\, on the left pane, right click on key {430FD4D0-B729-4F61-AA34-91526481799D}’ and select ‘Delete’ button.

3. Now navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE \Google\Update\Clients\, delete the  key {430FD4D0-B729-4F61-AA34-91526481799D} and all its sub folders.

Google update directory registry entry thumb Fix to “ Installation Failed. The Google Chrome Installer failed to Start”

4  For 64-bit Windows, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Google\Update\Clients, and delete this key {430FD4D0-B729-4F61-AA34-91526481799D} and all its sub folders shown on the right pane.

5. Now close Registry Editor and try to install Chrome again, this time it will work as happened with me.

In fact, I had not found key mentioned above for the registry entry in the second step, I have found it on the registry entry said in the third step.

Doesn’t help here.
Google doesn’t show a feedback button when I click on the link (which appears when getting the error) which shows line #3 as the solution. That sucks.
I think it’s hard to contact Google anyway. I think that’s evil. (Just as with Microsoft and other big companies who don’t offer an easy way to contact. They always point to useless forums and FAQ’s. I think those companies don’t have a clue about what’s user friendly and what not.) Google doesn’t show an option to download the english version of Chrome. That’s evil too.
Same error as Chris, but then in another language:
‘De installatie is mislukt. Het starten van het installatieprogramma van Google Chrome is mislukt.”

Btw, I had the reverse as topic starter: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE \Google\Update\Clients\; not HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE \Google\Update\Clients\.

It’s so depressing without chrome i just can’t do anything! and Im stuck wid this fucking firefox! please reply fast dude…im in huge trouble

Do you’ve admin privileges?. Try to open Regedit from command window and then try to delete the key.

Reply

Jerry Silver October 5, 2013 at 1:06 am

Didn’t work for me… I didn’t even have that registry key. Nor does running it under admin privileges.

Joe October 19, 2013 at 1:17 pm

Just to save you some pain and if no one else has mentioned it yet ( I haven’t read the comments). On 64bit Windows, the registry key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Google\Update.

Took me a while to find it.

Thanks Joe, I had been trying the other registry keys until I read your suggestion, and after using the “wow6432 Node” I was able to re-install Chrome successfully. This is the only key to use if you have 64bit Windows OS.

Lex December 29, 2013 at 3:18 am

Thanks for the information. This worked for me. Had to locate the RegKey within the wow6432Node

You sir, were tremendously helpful.

However, move the portion about the 64 bit up. I almost left before reading that seeing as it the initial set of instructions didn’t work!

Joe: I didn’t see where it was for a 64bit until I had followed through the first step, I was about to go to step three since I was not getting the results I needed in 2 and that was when I saw it’s for a 64 bit. Mine is a 32 bit. Do you know what I can do from here? Really feel broken now.
