Microsoft Edge Chromium gets Native Password Import feature

New Microsoft Edge does allow users to export saved passwords from its Password Manager Settings to a CSV file, but it doesn’t offer an option to import passwords into the browser. Finally, this has been addressed in Edge 90 canary through a flag.

When comes to managing Passwords in the new Edge Chromium, the browser

  • Has a Password Generator built-in that can create strong and unique passwords
  • Also, alerts when your passwords are leaked in a data breach,
  • lets you edit saved Passwords.
  • allows seeing password in the Password field through the reveal icon
  • Lacks or doesn’t provide import option for Passwords in its Password Settings

Enable Import Passwords option in Edge Password Manager

  1. Launch Edge browser
  2. Visit edge://flags
  3. Search for Password import

  4. Click on the dropdown arrow for the highlighted result, select “Enabled” and restart the browser

Import Passwords into Edge browser

  1. Head to edge://Settings/passwords
  2. Scroll down to Saved Passwords
  3. Click on the More actions (three-dot) icon and select “Import Passwords
  4. Click Choose file
  5. Select CSV  file and click Open

To Export Saved Passwords in Edge to a CSV  file, you need to select the ” Export Passwords” option in the third step.

Note: Recently we covered a convoluted method to import passwords into Edge by installing Microsoft Authenticator App in Android. That no longer requires going forward.

Summary: The import Passwords for Edge is hidden behind a flag in Edge 90 in the Canary version. you need to enable it and you can then successfully import or export passwords using Edge browser.
