Hands on Microsoft Edge’s Kids Mode

Microsoft has designed an appropriate browsing mode for Kids inside Microsoft Edge, called Kids Mode. Currently, it is available to a subset of users via Controlled Rollouts in Edge 90 Canary, here is how you can enable and use it irrespective of whether you’re part of Rollout or not.

What you need to know:

  • Microsoft Edge is getting Kids Mode
  • currently available to some users in Canary in the US on Windows
  • Kids Mode comes with a whitelist of sites

Edge’s Kids mode

  1. allows choosing age range between 5 to 8 and 9 to 12 years.

  2. enables Bing SafeSearch and Strict Tracking Prevention
  3. includes limited settings to change browser appearance and clear browsing data
  4. Children can visit Appearance settings and change the Edge theme to their liking from available.
  5. If Kids encounter other sites than pre-approved sites, they’ll be asked to enter a Windows account credential.

  6. To exit or close Kids mode, a family member or parent need to type Windows password
  7. To manually add websites to Edge in Kids Mode, visit Settings > Family >Manage allowed sites in Kids Mode and click “add website”

Note: you need to hover over the top  with the mouse pointer to see the tab bar

Enable Kids Mode in Edge browser right now

  1. If Edge is running, click on Settings and more and select the Close option
  2. Right-click on the Edge shortcut on the desktop
  3. Select Properties
  4. In the Target, field add the following at the end after giving a space
    --enable-features=msKidsModeEnabled
  5. The total shortcut should be like this:
    "C:UsersusernameAppDataLocalMicrosoftEdge SxSApplicationmsedge.exe" --enable-features=msKidsModeEnabled
  6. Launch Edge, click on the profile icon, and select “Browse in Kids mode”

As of now, the above command line flag is working in Canary only.
