Windows 10 KB4524147 reportedly breaks Start Menu and gives Critical Error, fails to install for some

Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB4524147 released yesterday, already causing issues to users. Some users reporting their “start menu” has broken and giving “critical error” after installing the update and some Windows 10 users running May 2019 update say they not able to install the update as its failing with an error and there are reports of the update not fixing the printer issues as well.

your start menu isn't working critical error after KB4524147

Some of the users who installed the update, reporting they’re not able to open the start menu as it gives a critical error with the message ” Your Start menu isn’t working. We’ll try to fix it next time you sign in”. The issue has been confirmed by users on Reddit and on the answers forum. One affected user says uninstalling update has restored the start menu.

Windows 10 in the past troubled users with start menu and Cortana aren’t working critical error, at that time company suggested affected users to boot into safe mode with networking and asked them to sign into safe mode and restart system to normal boot mode and start Windows, there is also PowerShell script available to resolve that, later MS has addressed that with a cumulative update.

The most common issue users face when they install Windows 10 Cumulative Updates is they fail for some reason and display an error, this update too is failing to install to some. Installing the update manually from the Microsoft Update catalog is worth a try in this situation.

Are printing issues unresolved?

Meanwhile, these issues also submitted to Feeback Hub by affected users and one user using HP Officejet Pro 8740 provided feedback that the update hasn’t fixed the printing issue for him, it crashes Chrome when Ctrl+P command is used and says Microsoft Word fails to print. The user confirms uninstalling the update has solved the issue.

Another user with the same HP printer model reports LibreOffice and Notepad are closing when he tries to print from them.

Do remember, the update released by Microsoft not only incudes fixes to printing and .net 3.5 install issues but it is a mandatory security update that fixes a serious vulnerability in the IE scripting engine.

Though affected users say uninstalling KB4524147 has resolved their problems, you shouldn’t be doing that, we suggest you wait for Microsoft to acknowledge these issues first. So far, Microsoft hasn’t mentioned any known issues in the update document page.

Do you have any issues with the update?

Unable to see any printer on small office network. Had to remove the KB 4524147 update completely. I did notice also that in Control Panel, printers, there was no way to set a “default printer” until the update had been uninstalled. After uninstall the “Default Printer” option was then enabled and any printer could be picked.

Had to uninstall KB4524147. It had removed all my installed printers, stopped print spooler. I restarted pc again, had to restart print spooler, still could not add any printers. Ran troubleshooter said there was a problem with print spooler. Tried again to add printer with no success. Uninstalled update rebooted. I now have printers back and I’m able to print.
