How to enable and disable Netflix Smart Downloads

To enable or disable Netflix Smart Downloads, open the Netflix app, tap My Netflix, tap your profile name, tap App Settings, then tap Smart Downloads under Downloads and flip each toggle.

This guide explains the two Smart Downloads features, which devices and plans support them, how to set storage for Downloads for You, and what to do when nothing downloads.

Turn Netflix Smart Downloads on or off

The same steps work on an iPhone, iPad, Android phone and Android tablet. Smart Downloads has two separate switches, so you can keep one on and turn the other off.

  1. Open the Netflix app.
  2. Tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
  3. Tap your profile name at the top.
  4. Tap App Settings.
  5. Under Downloads, tap Smart Downloads.
  6. Toggle Download Next Episode on or off.
  7. Toggle Downloads for You on or off.

Turning both switches off disables Smart Downloads completely. Titles you already downloaded stay on the device until you delete them or they expire.

  1. Check Download Next Episode is turned on in Smart Downloads.
  2. Connect the device to a Wi-Fi network.

  1. Check Downloads for You is toggled on.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi.
  3. Free up storage on the phone or tablet, or lower the GB amount set for the profile.

The Smart Downloads option is missing

The account is on an ad-supported plan, or the app is out of date.

  1. Update the Netflix app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Check your plan in your Netflix account; Smart Downloads needs a plan without ads.
  3. Reopen App Settings and look under Downloads again.
