Malwarebytes Strict License Enforcement causes Issues to Lifetime License users

In the last 24 hours, there were more complaints from the users in Malwarebytes support forum that their lifetime license lost, seeing “usage level exceeded” and “license key blocklisted” error messages. Malwarebytes is aware of all these issues and acknowledged is due to the changes they are making to their licensing systems.

If you’ve bought Malwarebytes lifetime license in the past and used it on more than one device, let me tell you this no longer possible with recently released Malwarebytes 3.8 and Malwarebytes confirms in a thread after complaints raised by users that “as we improve our licensing and management enforcement, some users may experience license errors”.

The company in a thread suggested the affected users to link their license to Malwarebytes account at my.malwarebytes.com to get protected from unauthorized use of the license on multiple devices.

Here is the error Malwarebytes lifetime license users now receiving” The usage level has exceeded the maximum volume allowed. There is a problem with your license key and we are unable to activate your license. Please check your license details and try entering your key again”.

The anti-malware vendor confirms users who purchased lifetime licenses are seeing the above error because of “rampant over usage of legacy licenses” and says Lifetime licenses are never sold for more than one computer and assures users following subscription model who bought multi-PC license should not face this issue.

Fix

  1. If you’ve brought Malwarebytes from Malwarebytes Store visit this link and sign in with your email address (which you used to purchase the subscription) and password and manage your subscriptions and ensure you deactivate the machines if you’ve extra computers in your account.

2. If that doesn’t help, contact Malwarebytes support and provide the following information when you open a ticket

  • Copy of original proof of purchase
  • The email address you used when you purchased the license when

Even if you’re not affected do note, before reinstalling Windows, you should always deactivate Malwarebytes license by using the option provided in the account details window, otherwise, you’ll receive usage level exceeded with error code 403 which we’ve received in the past when we tried to activate Malwarebytes and do read How to transfer Malwarebytes License to a new computer?.
