A while back, Google has said it will improve the Cookie Controls it offers to users in Chrome browser to tackle the cross-site cookies, Chrome Canary already provide a feature for incognito mode via a flag, which when enabled, blocks third-party cookies on websites and informs the user through a UI from the address bar, Chrome team now has expanded the UI to normal browsing mode as well with a new flag in Canary.
As you know, Google Chrome itself offers a setting to block third-party cookies at “Cookies and site data” page in Settings. Recently, a commit has been made and a flag has been added to let existing users who block third-party cookies to activate the new cookie controls UI in the browser.
The flag is available in Canary and when turned on, gives “an improved UI for existing third-party cookie blocking users”.
Do note this is a separate and different experimental feature over “Enable improved cookie controls UI in incognito mode”, to get cookie controls in both regular and incognito modes, you need to enable both flags shown in the screenshot below.
1. Ensure you’re using latest Chrome Canary
2. Visit chrome://flags/#improved-cookie-controls-for-third-party-cookie-blocking
3. Select “Enabled” and restart the browser.
Now Visit chrome://settings/content/cookies and enable ” Block Third-party cookies”
Now visit any website in the browser, you’ll notice a new shield type icon in the address bar, which on hover over says “Third-party cookie blocking is on” and when clicked displays the cookie blocking UI and informs Chrome is blocking cookies from so and so number of sites.
If you now click on the Lock icon in the address bar and select Cookies, Blocked tab in “Cookies in Use” dialog window shows which 3rd-party cookies were blocked.
