Microsoft enables Tab Groups by default in Edge 93

Microsoft has finally enabled the Tab Groups feature by default in Microsoft Edge 93 canary and developer versions without you need to use the flag. In addition to that Collapsing option is also available. Tab Groups could be a mighty addition to Edge and will be a great tab organizing tool apart from Vertical Tabs and Collections.

Tab groups

Google first launched Tab groups in Chrome.

If you’ve plenty of tabs open, organizing them is a tedious task.

Tab Groups is the perfect tool that lets you group tabs into distinct groups.

Collapse Tab Groups

Collapsing tab groups is another useful feature that shrinks all tabs into a small tab and available when you need them with a single click.

The Tab groups feature in Microsoft Edge has been available behind a flag for a long time and now made into Dev and Canary versions.

If you’re new to the feature, here is how you can create your first tab group in Edge.

  • Right-click on a tab or multiple tabs and select add tab (s) to the group. Name the group, customize the color of the header.
  • To ungroup tabs, right-click on a tab and select “Remove from group or right-click on the group name and select “Ungroup

You can even group tabs in the Vertical tab layout also.

And, Edge allows adding Tab Groups to Collections.

Upcoming Tab groups new features

Auto Create Tab Groups: Chrome comes with the ability to automatically create tab groups from the same domain. We’ve explained and created a video on how this works here.

The above-mentioned grouping tabs features are available out of the box in Chrome, but not in Edge.

A few months back we’ve covered the auto-create and collapse tab groups feature in Edge.

While Tab Groups collapsing is now available in Edge, you need to enable the following flag in Edge to auto-create tab groups.

edge://flags/#edge-tab-groups-auto-create

Tab groups collapse freezing: Google is currently testing to ensure Tab Groups consumes fewer resources when Collapsed with “Tab Groups Collapse freezing”.

You can test this in Edge by visiting edge://flags/#edge-tab-groups-collapse-freezing in the address bar.
