Google wants to ensure the tabs in the tab group after collapsing shouldn’t consume resources in the background, that’s why the company is working to bring “tab freezing” behind the experimental “Tab Groups Collapse Freezing” feature in Chrome Canary.
Sometime back, Google announced it will bring Tab Groups to Chrome in the coming weeks, the feature is still not available, you can enable it right now if you want by visiting chrome://flags page.
We’ve reported Chrome allows us to collapse a tab group by clicking on the tab group icon or name. By collapsing unused tab groups, you can make tab bar less cluttered and it also looks clean.
It’s worth noting that the tabs in the collapsed groups are not visible, but the tabs in it could still be consuming valuable system resources, Chromium team is addressing this by enabling tab freezing for collapsed tab group.
To test this feature,
1. Launch Chrome browser
2. Visit chrome://flags page
3. Search for “Tab Groups Collapse Freezing”
4. Select “Enabled” from the dropdown and restart the browser.
Google offers this description for the feature flag:
“Experimental tab freezing upon collapsing a tab group -Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS”.
