Thunderbird 78.0 Major Update is now available for download

The popular open-source email client, Mozilla Thunderbird’s major version 78.0 now available for download with new features and improvements.

For a year, Thunderbird is on version 68.0. Thunderbird 78 available today on July 15, 2020, is not just a version bump, but a massive upgrade if you look at the OpenPGP Support and other stuff it is bringing to the table.

Key changes

  • This version of Thunderbird natively supports reading and sending PGP encrypted email.
  • New redesigned Compose window
  • Ture dark mode
  • The Calendar is no longer an add-on, integrated into the Thunderbird.
  • Updated account setup and Settings
  • Folder icon color management
  • You can now minimize Thunderbird to the system tray.

The Thunderbird new version isn’t officially released, but it is still available for download for Windows, Mac, and Linux from FTP server and third-party mirror sites.

While the final version release notes is not yet available, here is the changelog from v78 beta.

What’s new:

Color customization of Folder Pane icons

Additional Enterprise policies.

Calendar: Add event preview to ICS import dialog.

Chat: Direct message support in Matrix.

Mail Extensions:

  • UI components for browser pages added
  • browser.identity.API enabled
  • Event fired when the user changes compose identity

Preference to disable OpenPGP functionality
