Mozilla has recently released Thunderbird 60 with new a Photon look and dark and light themes support. The new version of Thunderbird also comes with a new logo, but you can’t add the Google Search as the search engine and set it as default, true! And at the moment there is no solution available to this.
Cannot add and set Google as default Search engine in Thunderbird 60
After installing or upgrading to Thunderbird 60, when you try to install Google Search for Thunderbird add-on, you’ll notice the add-on is not compatible.
This how generally you can install an add-on in Thunderbird.
1. Click on hamburger menu icon, select Add-ons > Extensions
2. Type the name of the extension in the search field and press enter,
3. When search results open in a new tab on the Thunderbird add-ons site, select the extension and install
4. Restart Thunderbird.

Here in the case of Google Search add-on for Thunderbird, Add-ons sites for Thunderbird is showing ‘This add-on is not compatible with your version of Thunderbird’ message. If that doesn’t work, the below method has to work.

There is another way to use Google Search in Thunderbird, that is by adding Google Search to Open Search, which is also not working, if you’re interested to try, here is how you can to do that.
1.Close Thunderbird
2.Open Thunderbird profile,
Set Windows to show hidden files and folder, visit
C:Users<username>AppDataRoamingThunderbirdProfilesxxxx..default
Tip: To quickly open the Thunderbird profile folder, in Thunderbird, press Alt, Help > Troubleshooting information, click ‘Open Folder’ opposite to Profile Folder, under Application Basics.
3. Create searchplugins folder and place google.xml file in it.
4. Find and remove search.json.mozlz4 from Thunderbird profile folder
Now when you launch Thunderbird, and open options, under General, you should see Google icon in the listed websites below Default Search engine, which is also not happening.

So both ways are not working and you probably have to wait for the add-on to get updated to support the latest version of Thunderbird.
What do you do now? Are you missing Google Search in Thunderbird? If you’ve added it tell us how? Don’t you think Mozilla should’ve addressed this when Thunderbird 60 was in beta stage? Let us know in the comments below.
