Edge gets another feature that Chrome doesn’t have- shows a prompt when you close all tabs in a browser window. This will help users avoid losing tabs when they do that accidentally. The new feature is most useful when you’ve not set Edge to open the previous session on startup in Settings. Edge Legacy, Opera, Vivaldi, and Firefox browsers currently ask for your confirmation when you try to close the browser window with multiple tabs open.
Edge already comes with a set of Startup options, that let you
- Open a new tab
- Continue where you left off
- Open a specific page or pages
With Edge by default set to load the start page, you may lose your tabs if you close the Edge browser accidentally.
Though, you can reopen the last closed window by using the Ctrl+shift+T shortcut or by selecting the option in the Tab bar context menu.
This may not work all time, especially when Edge crashes. And, many users may not aware of it as the option on the tab bar is not easily discoverable- requires a right-click.
To address this, Microsoft is bringing close all tabs warning for the new Edge browser based on Chromium. Currently, the feature is available behind a flag in Edge Canary 89.0.739.0
Enable “Close all tabs” warning in Edge Chromium browser
- Launch Edge browser
- Visit edge://flag page
- Search for “Ask before closing multiple tabs”
- Click on the drop-down arrow, select “Enabled”
- Restart the browser
- Click on the three-dot icon and Select Settings > Appearance
- Enable the “Ask before Closing multiple tabs” setting.
From now on, whenever you try to close tabs, Edge prompts you to “Do you want to close all tabs”, simply select “Close All”
You can always find recently closed tabs in the new History menu by selecting the History option in the Edge menu.
After testing out the feature, if you don’t want Edge to warn you when you close multiple tabs, either select “Don’t ask me again” before clicking close all or
Head to Settings > Apepaance and disable ” Ask Before closing multiple tabs” Setting.
Edge’s close all tabs prompt feature is available in version 89, according to the planned schedule, Edge 89 is expected to arrive in the first week of March 2021.

Edge 89 is out recently, still, we don’t have this setting in Edge. Why? Why user has to tamper with flags for every most requested feature? I don’t like to tamper with flags as it might not be safe or it might decrease the stability of the Edge?
It is still available behind the flag. The flag has not graduated as a feature even in Edge 90 canary. If you want it, go and enable it or you can also use Edge without that feature. It’s all up to you.
