Microsoft to make Edge Web Apps more native in Windows 10

Microsoft is planning to make Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) installed in the Chromium Edge browser to appear more native to Windows Shell in the upcoming Windows 10 builds higher than build 19022.

Google Chrome and new Microsoft Edge supports PWAs and let you install them with a single click when you visit respective app sites in the browser. Chromium Edge offers a back button and Jumplist support for PWAs, whereas Chrome also offers forward and back navigation support in Web Apps.

The thing is an installed Edge Web App still runs as Microsoft Edge instance which you can notice in Task Manager under Processes tab, though you can’t uninstall Chrome Web Apps from the control panel in Windows, you can uninstall Edge PWAs from Control Panel for sure.

Microsoft to make uninstall of Web Apps more easier and the app names will show up on Task Manager instead of Microsoft Edge’s. Microsoft employee also confirms Edge Web apps in the future will get badges and unique jumplists too.

Microsoft employee Johnjansen says in a forum thread that “the “Web Apps Identity Proxy” flag which is available in Edge Canary version ” enables PWAs on the upcoming Windows release (builds greater than 19022) to appear to shell more like a native app would”.

As of now Web apps identity Proxy flag which offers description “Enables installed Web apps to be created with more Windows application identity for better integration with Windows Shell”, does nothing when turned on.
