How to batch Convert SNAG files to PNG or JPG Images?

Last updated on March 31, 2018 By Venkat

Snagit automatically saves unsaved capture as a SNAG file (Snagit capture file) in DataStore folder, here is the full path to it : C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\TechSmith\Snagit\DataStore. The advantage with .SNAG file format -you can only open this file in Snagit Editor on Windows -is it keeps vector-based objects such as callouts, stamps … and allows to edit them at any time.

Not the case when you save the capture or image containing vector-objects in other formats, then they will be flattened and can’t be separated from the image.

Batch converting SNAG files to PNG or JPG using Snagit

If you don’t know Snagit has a built-in batch image converter which lets you convert a group of images from one file format to another.

If you’ve plenty of snag files, to convert them to PNG or JPG:

1. Open Snagit Editor, click on the File menu, select ‘Convert images’, select files (browse, select one file and press Ctrl+A to select all)’

Snagit image conversion wizard with addition of .snag files

2. In step 2, you can add special effects such as caption, borders, edge effects, watermark and other (click on ‘Modify’ in Snagit 12 for these to appear)

3.  In the third step, specify the output directory and chose the file format in which you want to save converted images.

4.  And click on ‘Finish ‘button for the conversion process to start, once the conversion completes, images are available to access in the output directory you mentioned in step 3.

Really helpful. I have the old version of SnagIt, and while I won’t update to the new version, I’m thankful TechSmith added functionality to get the images out.
