Chrome for Android: Bookmarks getting a ‘Visual Refresh’

Google is bidding goodbye to the old Bookmark list in Chrome on Android and is updating with new visuals. This could be a major rewrite, just not Bookmarks Refresh. The changes can now be seen in Canary verison, with bookmark folders to get color and more changes in the pipeline under the name “Power Bookmarks” as the Chrome team calls it as feature name, they’re working on.

Here is what you need to know:

  • The Mobile bookmarks in chrome for Android to appear with large website favicons with the new design.
  • And, you can now see the new bookmark visuals right now.

“Add new layout for visual refresh and swap it out for the old one.
This change covers the basic styles in the mocks, but doesn’t cover the changes to specific folder coloring which will be addressed later once those aspects are cleared up

Enable new “Visual Refresh” UI for Bookmarks in Chrome for Android

  1. Launch Chrome Canary for Android
  2. Visit chrome://flags in the address bar
  3. Search for “Enable the a visual refresh for Bookmarks”

  4. In the dropdown arrow, select Enabled and relaunch the browser.
  5. Tap more icon, and select “Bookmarks” to see the updated Bookmark list.

Google is also working on the Shopping list and Bookmark Bottom Sheet features for Chrome Bookmarks on Android.

These are behind flags also, while, Shopping list in Bookmarks isn’t working, the Bookmark Bottom sheet is functional.

When you bookmark, the bottom sheet allows you to add a bookmark to the Reading List, Mobile Bookmarks, and Bookmarks bar.
