The official HitmanPro download sits on Sophos’s own site, and the scan costs nothing. Sophos publishes a 64-bit file and a 32-bit file, and neither one installs anything on the PC.
HitmanPro is a Windows tool. Sophos points Mac owners at Sophos Home instead, and that route is covered below.
This guide covers which file to take, the official links, how to run a scan, what the free 30-day licence pays for, and fixes for a download that stalls.

Which HitmanPro download do you need?
Sophos lists two files for the scanner and one for the always-on companion product. Match your case and take the link beside it.
| Your case | Download | Runs on |
|---|---|---|
| 64-bit Windows 11 or Windows 10 | HitmanPro_x64.exe | The Download 64-bit button on the Sophos page |
| 32-bit Windows, or an older PC | HitmanPro.exe | Windows 8.1 back to Vista and XP |
| You want protection running all the time | hmpalert3.exe | Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8 and 7 SP1 |
| You are on a Mac | Sophos Home | Sophos states the scanner is Windows-only |
Not sure which Windows you run? Right-click Start and select System. The System type line names 32-bit or 64-bit.

Download HitmanPro from the official Sophos page
Every link below resolves to sophos.com. Nothing here routes through a mirror or a download portal.
- HitmanPro 64-bit, HitmanPro_x64.exe — the Download 64-bit button
- HitmanPro 32-bit, HitmanPro.exe — the Download 32-bit button
- Sophos downloads page — both buttons and the supported Windows list
- HitmanPro.Alert, hmpalert3.exe — the always-on product, 30-day trial
- Version information — the build list and what changed in each
- Sophos free tools — the licence wording and the other free downloads

How to download and run HitmanPro on Windows 11 and 10
There is no setup wizard. The file you save is the program, so the whole job is download, run, scan.
- Open the Sophos downloads page.
- Select Download 64-bit, or Download 32-bit on a 32-bit copy of Windows.
- Save the file when the browser asks. Sophos serves it from download.sophos.com.
- Open your Downloads folder and double-click HitmanPro_x64.exe.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Start the scan from the opening screen. Nothing is written to Program Files.
- Leave the PC online. The scan draws on databases from four security labs, SophosLabs among them.
- Read the results list when the scan finishes.
- Activate the free 30-day licence when the tool offers it, then clear what it found.
- Close the window. Keep the file for the next scan, or delete it.
Sophos designed the tool to sit beside an existing antivirus, so nothing needs uninstalling first.
What HitmanPro scans for and removes
Sophos names the threat classes the scanner handles, and Build 346 added one more.
| Target | What Sophos states |
|---|---|
| Malware, viruses, trojans and worms | Cleaned by the scan |
| Keyloggers, rootkits and spyware | Cleaned by the scan |
| Trackers and tracking cookies | Cleaned by the scan |
| Chromium-based browser PUA extensions | Detection and removal added in Build 346 |
| Boot records | Malware is removed from them |
| Damaged Windows resources | Repaired during clean-up |
| Your existing antivirus | Left alone. No need to uninstall any other software |
| Signature-less threats | Behaviour is examined during the scan, with or without a signature |
Is HitmanPro free?
The answer splits in two, and the split is where most of the confusion on this product starts.
Scanning is free, and removal is free for 30 days once the scan finds something. Sophos states that the tool scans your entire computer, and that if anything is found you get a free 30-day licence to remove the threat. Past those 30 days a paid licence is needed. The Buy Now button on the Sophos product page opens the HitmanPro shop, and Sophos lists no price on its own pages.
Anything advertising a free full licence, a key generator or a cracked build is not from Sophos. Sophos serves the file itself, at no charge, from download.sophos.com.
Should you download HitmanPro or HitmanPro.Alert?
Sophos ships two products from the same downloads page, and they answer different problems.
Take the scanner for a one-off clean-up, and take HitmanPro.Alert if you want cover running all the time. The scanner runs on demand and removes what it finds. Alert includes the scanner and adds CryptoGuard ransomware protection, extra layers around vulnerable programs, keystroke encryption and webcam alerts. Alert also needs Windows 7 SP1 or newer, so Vista and XP machines are limited to the scanner.
Can you download HitmanPro on a Mac?
Sophos states it plainly on the Alert page: this is a Windows PC-only product. The company routes Mac owners to a different tool.
| What you want | What to use | Where |
|---|---|---|
| A Sophos scanner on macOS | Sophos Home | home.sophos.com |
| One product across a Mac and a PC | Sophos Home Premium, free 30-day trial, no card needed | Sophos free tools |
| The scanner itself on a Mac | Not published. Sophos calls it a Windows PC-only product | Sophos statement |
| A scan on a Windows PC you also own | The 64-bit file | HitmanPro_x64.exe |
How to check your HitmanPro build and update it
Nothing updates itself here, because nothing is installed. Keeping current means fetching the file again.
- Open the version information page on sophos.com.
- Read the top entry. It names the current build and the date it shipped.
- Compare that number with the build the copy on your disk reports.
- Delete the saved file if it trails the published build.
- Return to the Sophos downloads page and select Download 64-bit again.
- Run the fresh file. There is no patch step and no upgrade prompt.
Build 346 shipped on 5 February 2026. It added Chromium-based PUA extension removal, showed Disk Access Mode in the title bar, hardened the program and fixed scanning failures on ARM devices.
Fix HitmanPro not downloading or not running on Windows 11
Four symptoms cover nearly every failed attempt. Work through the group that matches yours.
The download never starts and no file appears
Sophos passes files on download.sophos.com through a redirect before serving them, and some proxies and browser filters drop the request there.
- Start from the Sophos downloads page rather than a link saved months ago.
- Select Download 64-bit and let the browser finish redirecting.
- Open your browser’s Downloads list and select Keep on any blocked entry.
- Turn off a filtering proxy or VPN, then request the file again.
- Try a second browser if the file still never lands.
SmartScreen blocks the file
Windows marks files that arrived from the internet and holds them until you clear the mark.
- Right-click the downloaded file and select Properties.
- Tick Unblock on the General tab, then select OK.
- Double-click the file again.
- Select More info, then Run anyway, if a warning still appears.
Your antivirus quarantines the file
A second-opinion scanner reads the same areas malware hides in, so a resident product sometimes flags one.
- Open the quarantine list in your antivirus.
- Restore the file and note the path it came from.
- Add your Downloads folder to that product’s exclusion list.
- Fetch the file again from sophos.com and run it.
The file will not open at all
A 64-bit file cannot start on a 32-bit copy of Windows.
- Right-click Start and select System.
- Read the System type line.
- Return to the Sophos downloads page if it says 32-bit.
- Select Download 32-bit and run HitmanPro.exe instead.

How to uninstall HitmanPro
The scanner installs nothing, so Installed apps holds no entry for it. Deleting the file is the whole removal.
- Close the window if a scan is running.
- Open your Downloads folder.
- Delete HitmanPro_x64.exe, or HitmanPro.exe on a 32-bit PC.
- Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Open Settings, select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Look for a HitmanPro.Alert entry, which is a real install and does appear there.
- Select the three dots beside it, select Uninstall, then restart the PC.
Which free Sophos tool should you use instead?
Sophos publishes several free tools, and two of them overlap with the scanner.
| Tool | What it does | Platform | Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sophos Scan & Clean | Free second-opinion virus removal scanner that needs no install | Windows | Product page |
| Sophos Home | Consumer protection with a free 30-day Premium trial and no card required | Windows and Mac | home.sophos.com |
| HitmanPro.Alert | Includes the scanner and adds ransomware, exploit and webcam cover | Windows 11 to 7 SP1 | Alert page |
| Intercept X for Mobile | Watches the device, its network and its apps for signs of compromise | iOS and Android | Sophos free tools |

Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions people type alongside this download.
Is HitmanPro free?
The scan is free. Sophos states that if the scan finds anything, you get a free 30-day licence to remove the threat. After those 30 days, removal needs a paid licence bought through the HitmanPro shop.
What is the official HitmanPro download page?
The downloads page on sophos.com carries both files. The 64-bit button serves HitmanPro_x64.exe and the 32-bit button serves HitmanPro.exe, both from download.sophos.com. No other host is official.
Does HitmanPro work on Windows 11?
Yes. Sophos lists Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP, in 32-bit and 64-bit form, on the download page itself.
Where is the HitmanPro 64-bit download?
It is the Download 64-bit button on the Sophos downloads page, which serves HitmanPro_x64.exe. The separate 32-bit button serves HitmanPro.exe for older machines.
Is there a HitmanPro offline installer?
There is no installer at all. Sophos states that no setup or install is needed, and the downloaded file runs directly. The scan itself reaches databases from four security labs, so keep the PC online.
Does HitmanPro run on Mac?
No. Sophos calls it a Windows PC-only product and points Mac owners to Sophos Home, which covers macOS and Windows and starts on a free 30-day Premium trial.
Is the HitmanPro download safe?
Take it from sophos.com and nowhere else. Sophos owns the product, having acquired SurfRight in 2015, and serves both files from download.sophos.com. Key generators and cracked builds are not from Sophos.
Which HitmanPro version is current?
Build 346, released on 5 February 2026. It added removal of Chromium-based browser PUA extensions, put Disk Access Mode in the title bar and fixed scanning failures on ARM devices.
Can HitmanPro run alongside my antivirus?
Yes. Sophos describes it as a second-opinion scanner and states there is no need to uninstall any other software. It runs on demand rather than sitting in memory.
What is the difference between HitmanPro and HitmanPro.Alert?
The scanner cleans on demand. Alert includes the scanner and adds CryptoGuard ransomware protection, layers around vulnerable programs, keystroke encryption and webcam alerts, running all the time.
How do I remove HitmanPro from my PC?
Delete the downloaded file. Nothing was installed, so no entry appears under Installed apps. HitmanPro.Alert is different and uninstalls from Settings, Apps, Installed apps.
Why will HitmanPro not download?
Two causes cover most cases. A filtering proxy or browser blocked the redirect Sophos uses before serving the file, or Windows held the saved file until you tick Unblock in its Properties.
