Chrome can now Translate Text in Images on the Fly

Google Chrome gets the ability to translate text in images from the right-click menu through a new context menu item. This results in the Side panel using Google Lens displaying the whole image in a foreign language page in English. The context menu item “Translate text in image with Google” appears automatically for images while a page is translated. Here is how you can enable it right now in the Chrome browser.

Google Lens is a powerful tool that is helpful in finding image information of a device you come across while shopping.

Google has already ported Lens features available in Chrome on Android to the Desktop sometime back.

By right-clicking and selecting the image search option, Chrome displays information with options to find an image source, extract text, and translate any foreign language text in that photo.

On the other hand, Google Translate integrated or built into Chrome automatically translates pages. It even got the ability to translate highlighted text in Chrome.

Now, Chrome by using Google Lens can translate images containing text much quicker after translation when you select a new displayed option, here is how you can enable and test this new feature.

How to Enable Translate text in Images with Google Lens feature in Chrome

  1. Launch Chrome
  2. Visit chrome://flags
  3. Search for “translate”, and find “Translate text in Images with Google Lens

  4. Select the Enabled option in the dropdown
  5. Relaunch browser.

After this, head to the non-English web page and translate the page.

Next, right-click on an image and select the ” Translate text in image with Google” option, the translated image will be displayed in Side Panel.

When you right-click on a picture in Chrome, you’ll get options to copy, copy its address, save to the computer, create a QR code, and open in a new tab, now in addition to them, Chrome in the future could show up new option that automagically translates images having text in a foreign language to English.

The feature or change being tested in Chrome 112 Canary.

Unless otherwise told, the feature is applicable for Chrome running on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome OS.

Do note, the flags are experimental, may appear, disappear, and may break Chrome. There is no guarantee Google will ship them to the public.

Ensure caution before testing them. Canary is not intended to run in a working environment.
