Microsoft has started rolling out a new Media Player app for Windows 11 to insiders in Dev Channel through Microsoft Store. The app replaces Groove Music and it can play local audio and video media.
New Media Player for Windows 11
Keep in mind that Legacy Windows Media Player will be continue to available under Windows Tools in Windows 11. As of now, Films &TV also co-exists as a separate app.
Highlights:
- Media Player with Windows 11 look and feel is available and rolling out via Microsoft Store to insiders in the dev channel
- It comes with fluent design, rounded corners, Mica effect, Orange accent color, and a new font,

- Replaces Groove Music App.

- Comes with light, dark, and System support themes.
- Music Library allows you to browse and play music and lets you create and manage playlists as well.

- Library and playlists from Groove Music if you’ve any will be seamlessly and automatically migrated to Media Player.
- MP when running in full screen and as mini-player features album art and rich artist imagery.

- Content from Music and videos folders on Windows 11 will be automatically added and displayed by Media Player in Library. You can add music and video library location manually also in Settings.
Click on Settings and further Click on “Add Folder” for Music Library Locations and Video Library Locations respectively under General. - Microsoft promises you’ll enjoy listening to music and watching videos on Windows 11’s new Media Player.
Knows issues:
As of now, there is an issue with
- playback from network locations
- editing album metadata.
- Sorting library content with accented characters
- Media Player UI elements do not respect app theme preference. For instance, it doesn’t honor Windows 11 dark mode by default.
Micorsoft says to look for future updates as they offer new ways to browse music and video collections and manage play queue.
How to get/download the new Media Player for Windows 11 now
Currently, it is avialable to Windows 11 Dev channel insiders on Microsoft Store for download from here.
- Open Microsoft Store and check for Updates
- Upgrade Groove Music
- Launch it after the update by searching for “Groove ” in Start, it will launch New Media Player.
As always, you should expect Microsoft to release new Windows 11 apps and features to the Dev channel first for testing and feedback, after that only, they will reach the beta channel followed by Release Preview and production builds
