Notepad++ 8.0 adds Dark Theme, Distraction Free Mode and More

The open-source text editor, Notepad++ received a major update. Version 8.0 released with new features, improvements, and bug fixes. Most notably, the App gets Dark mode, fluent icons on the toolbar, and offers an ARM64 build that works on Microsoft Surface devices.

Dark Mode

Without argument, Notepad++ is the most useful text editor out there. Every application running on Windows 10 supports dark mode. You can name Web browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge as an example.

If you work on Notepad++, the default white background may hurt your eyes. The developer has added Dark Mode to Notepad++ with version 8, here is how you can enable it.

  1. Launch Notepad++
  2. Click on Settings > Preferences > Dark Mode
  3. Select “Enable  Dark Mode”
  4. You may need to restart Notepad++ to see the changes.

Do note, Preferences, other menus, and dialogs still appear white with Dark Mode enabled, they may appear dark in the future.

Distraction Free Mode

Like WordPress Editor, Notepad++ now comes with Distraction Free Mode for writing, here is how you can turn it on.

  1. Click on View
  2. Select Distraction Free Mode
  3. Write code or text, use Ctrl+S to save changes to document
  4. Click on + sign at the end to exit Distraction Free Mode.

Bing is no longer available as a Search engine for the “Search on Internet” command in this version of Notepad++.

This version comes with tiny Fluent icons on the toolbar.  You can change their look by going to Settings > Preference> General > Toolbar.
