Chrome to show number of Incognito Windows you’ve open by default

Last updated on February 12, 2019 By Venkat

Google Chrome to show how many incognito Windows you’ve open by showing their count next to the incognito icon on toolbar and lets you close all of them easily.

Chrome has “Incognito Window counter” flag available for a while now for Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome OS in about:flags, the experimental feature when enabled, displays open Private browsing windows count next to the incognito icon on the toolbar and is clickable to offer exit incognito option in the menu.

Chrome Incognito Window Counter

The Counter appears only when Incognito window open is more than one. For instance, if you’ve three incognito Windows open, 3 number will be shown in all those windows and if you click on the number, a menu reveals number of windows open and offers an option to quit private browsing mode.

Today, Chromium developers have made a commit to enable the flag by default, but the commit doesn’t offer any other details when it will be shipped to the stable channel.

I always use private browsing/incognito mode for my daily web exploring. I’ve never understood, while using mobile Chrome, why would they make it so easy for one to accidentally close all incognito tabs (via a prominent option in the “⋮” menu). With this counter feature they added a similar menu item. What’s up with them still favoring this connotation that private browsing is something to be discouraged? Why having a window counter at all?
