Microsoft Edge disables Alternate DNS Providers to fix Performance Issue

Apparently, Microsoft Edge no longer offers alternative DNS Providers Google PublicDNS, Cloudflare in the browser for DNS over HTTPS (DoH) when you try to choose a service provider in Settings. You’re are only left with the default secure DNS option for now. This change or issue can be seen in all Edge insider channels and stable version.

What you need to know:

  • Microsoft launched the DoH feature in Edge with version 86.
  • Edge uses Secure DNS as default when you enable the setting “use secure DNS to specify how to lookup the network address for websites”
  • In addition, to secure DNS, Edge also allows using of other custom DNS such as Cloudflare, Quad9, and Google PublicDNS.

DNS over HTTPS feature causes performance issues in Edge

What happened:

Edge 88 has come with a new performance issue where users reported it as slow and taking ages to load pages and showing “downloading the proxy scripts” message” at the bottom while establishing a connection to the site.

The only way to fix this is to turn off the Windows DNS Automatic configuration.

While that worked for many, the Edge team found out DNS over HTTPS configuration is causing the issue and pushed an update to the flag to address that.

The out-of-band update delivered to all Edge versions has not increased the version number but seems to have taken away Custom DNS provider options in Edge.

“We rolled out a configuration change today to the DNS over HTTPS flag that we believe has been causing some weird performance issues for some users” Edge Community Manage Missy Quarry said a week back.

As of now, if you visit Settings > Privacy, search and Services and select Choose a service provider, the Enter Custom Provider field doesn’t list DNS Providers to select.Edge does not list DNS to select

Expect Microsoft to reinstate these service providers once the performance issue was resolved.
