Media Hub in Google Chrome is getting better and better to control music. Till now, in addition to offering playback controls, the redesigned Global Media Controls allows us to enter the playing video in Picture-in-Pcture mode and select audio devices connected to play the music. To the latest, Google is offering a switch to toggle video’s live options in GMC UI.
Live Captions
Chrome’s new accessibility feature, Live Caption is pretty useful for disabled persons and language learners. The Live Captions feature once enabled in Chrome, detects speech in the video, and turns it into text, and displays on the screen in a dialog to see.
The Live caption is a feature already available in Google Pixel Phones and selects Android mobiles, Google is bringing the same to the desktop for Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. Currently, the feature requires enabling the “Live Captions” flag to funciton on all channels.
After enabling the flag (chrome://flags/#enable-accessibility-live-captions), you need to visit settings > Advanced > Acessibility and turn on ” Live Caption”.
Control Live Captions for Video in Chrome from Global Media Controls UI
Once this done, to see the option to Control Live Captions for running video in Chrome, you should have Modern Global Media Controls enabled.
For that,
- head to chrome://flags/#global-media-controls-modern-ui
- Click on the dropdown arrow and select “Enabled”
- Restart the browser
Now load YouTube and play any video, click on the GMC icon on the toolbar to notice “Live Caption” Switch at the bottom.
Similar to Picture in Picture, Google is now allowing to control Video Live Captions from Global Media Controls as well.
