The most important feature that Chrome lacked for Tab Groups till now is various tab groups created by users won’t be saved to disk and disappear when they close and restart Chrome browser. Something Chromium team is aware of and now they have addressed it, latest Chrome Canary now saves and restores tab groups, however, tab groups won’t be restored if you try to restore a tab or window from history sub-menu present in the hamburger menu.
If you recap what happened so far, Tab groups till now got headers and Chrome assigns distinct colors to them. If you don’t know, to “allow users to organize tabs into visually distinct groups”, the Chromium team announced tab groups and is behind a flag in Chrome Canary and new Edge browser.
To enable Tab groups
1. Visit chrome://flags
2. Find “Tab Groups”.
3. Select “Enabled” and restart the browser.
Now to create a tab group, right-click on a tab and select “Add to new group”, this becomes Group 1, add other tabs to this group or create another group.
These groups will now be visible even if you exit the browser and relaunch Chrome, provided, Chrome should be set to restore the previous session on startup, for that, select “continue where you left off” setting in Chrome Settings.
Update August 06, 2019: Chromium team has updated Tab groups, now you can “customize tab group visuals” in Canary: You can assign title and colors to a group of tabs. For that, right-click on a group name (e.g Group1), enter the title and choose from Blue, Cyan, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Red and Yellow. For the distinction between groups, its a good practice to assign to different colors to different tab groups.
