What is Discord Canary and how to download it

Discord Canary is Discord's alpha build of its desktop app: it gets new features first, updates most often and is the least stable of the three Discord release channels.

This guide explains how Canary compares with Stable and PTB, how to download it from Discord's own pages on Windows, macOS, Linux and the web, and how to report bugs or remove it.

What is Discord Canary?

Discord runs early access programs for its desktop app so people can try features before they reach everyone. Discord's own help article names three builds: Stable, Beta and Alpha.

On desktop, the Alpha build is called Canary. Discord describes it as "the most unstable version of Discord, with lots of updates" and asks testers to use it at their own risk.

Discord Canary is the official alpha version of the Discord desktop client, published by Discord itself, that shows features before they are released to everyone. Those features are untested, so Canary trades stability for early access. It is free, it comes from discord.com, and it is meant for people who are happy to hit bugs and report them.

The name follows the old mining idea of a canary as an early warning: problems show up in this build before they reach the Stable app most people use.

Discord Canary vs Discord Stable vs Discord PTB

All three builds connect to the same Discord service. They differ in how early you get changes and how many bugs come with them.

Build Discord's name for it Stability Where it runs Web address
Discord Stable Stable The standard version, usually without many bugs Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, browser discord.com
Discord PTB Beta (PTB on desktop, TestFlight on iOS, Beta on Android) More bugs than Stable, but should not get in the way of normal use Windows, macOS, Linux, browser, plus mobile beta programs ptb.discord.com
Discord Canary Alpha (Canary on desktop, Alpha on Android) The most unstable build, with the most frequent updates Windows, macOS, Linux, browser; Android has the Alpha equivalent canary.discord.com

The difference between Discord and Discord Canary is timing, not a different service: Canary receives changes first, PTB later, and Stable last.

Who should use Discord Canary?

Your situation Use this build Why
You want new features first and accept crashes Canary It gets changes before any other build
You want early features but need calls to work every day PTB Discord says Beta should not hinder normal use
You run a server, stream or rely on Discord for work Stable It has the fewest bugs
You want to test without installing anything Canary in a browser at canary.discord.com Nothing to uninstall later
You use an iPhone TestFlight beta Discord lists no Canary build for iOS
You use an Android phone and want the earliest build Android Alpha program Alpha is the Android equivalent of Canary

Is Discord Canary safe?

Yes, as long as you get it from Discord. Canary is an official Discord build, linked from Discord's own support site, not a modified client or a third-party app.

The risk is bugs, not malware. Discord says its testing builds are probably full of bugs and that you use them at your own risk.

Discord Canary is safe to install from Discord's own pages, but keep Stable available for anything that has to work. Copies from GitHub, forums or download portals are not published by Discord and may be altered. The official build can still crash, break voice or change features without warning, so it is a poor choice for a call you cannot miss.

Discord's Testing Clients help article is the official source for every Canary download link.

Discord Canary system requirements

Discord publishes one set of system requirements for its apps. Canary is a build of the same desktop client, so plan on the same minimums.

Platform Minimum Discord lists
Windows Windows 10 or later (x64 Canary installer)
macOS macOS 12 Monterey or later
Linux Ubuntu 20.04+, Debian 11+, openSUSE 16.2+, Fedora Linux 32+
Browser (canary.discord.com) Chrome 108+, Firefox 142+, Edge 86+, Opera 72+, Safari 15.4+
Account A regular Discord account; Canary has no separate sign-up

How to download Discord Canary on Windows

Discord links the Windows Canary installer from its Testing Clients article rather than from the main download page, which only offers the PTB test build.

  1. Open the Discord Testing Clients article in your browser.
  2. Find the Desktop section and select the Windows link for Canary.
  3. Check that the download starts from an address on discord.com before you open the file.
  4. Open your Downloads folder and double-click the Canary installer.
  5. Wait for the installer to finish and open Discord Canary.
  6. Sign in with your usual Discord email or phone number and password.

The same steps cover a Discord Canary download on Windows 11 and Windows 10. If you only need the normal app, download the regular Discord app instead.

How to download Discord Canary on macOS

  1. Open the Discord Testing Clients article in Safari or another browser.
  2. Under the Desktop downloads, select the macOS link for Canary.
  3. Open Finder and go to the Downloads folder.
  4. Double-click the Canary disk image and follow the onscreen steps to install the app.
  5. Open Discord Canary from Applications and sign in with your Discord account.

Discord Canary on Mac follows the same requirement as the main app, macOS 12 or later. The regular Discord for Mac app installs the same way.

How to download Discord Canary on Linux

Discord publishes Canary for Linux in four package formats. Pick the one that matches your distribution.

Your distribution Canary package on Discord's page How to install it
Ubuntu, Debian and derivatives deb Open the file with your software installer, or run sudo dpkg -i followed by the file path
Fedora, openSUSE rpm Open the file with your distribution's package tool
Arch Linux and other pacman-based distributions pkg.tar.zst Run sudo pacman -U followed by the file path
Any other distribution tar.gz Extract the archive into a folder you own and run the Discord Canary program inside it

All four links sit under the Linux entry in Discord's Testing Clients article. Canary's frequent updates mean a tar.gz copy needs replacing more often than a packaged install.

Discord Canary web login at canary.discord.com

Discord's desktop test builds also run in a browser, so you can try Canary without installing anything.

  1. Open a supported browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
  2. Type canary.discord.com into the address bar and press Enter.
  3. Sign in with your Discord email or phone number and password.
  4. Close the tab when you are done; nothing stays installed.

Discord does not support Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge versions before 17 for its browser builds.

Can you download Discord Canary on iPhone or Android?

Not as an app called Canary. Discord names Canary only for desktop, and each phone platform has its own testing program.

Phone Closest test build How to join How to leave
iPhone Beta through TestFlight (no Alpha or Canary build) Install TestFlight from the App Store, turn on its notifications, then sign up at dis.gd/testflight Open TestFlight, select Discord, tap Stop Testing, then install Discord from the App Store
Android Alpha (the Android equivalent of Canary) Sign in to your Google account, join the discord-android-alpha-testers Google group, then opt in through Discord's Google Play testing link Select Leave Group on the group's membership page; you may need to uninstall and reinstall Discord from Google Play to return to Stable
Android Beta Join through Google Play's beta program for Discord Leave the beta program in Google Play

On a phone you can also open canary.discord.com in the browser, but the desktop web app is built for larger screens.

How to use Discord Canary alongside regular Discord

Discord lists Canary as its own download, apart from the Stable app, and also serves it in a browser at canary.discord.com. The browser route is the simplest way to try Canary next to the regular desktop app, because nothing extra gets installed.

  1. Keep using the regular Discord app for calls and streams that must work.
  2. Open canary.discord.com in a browser tab, or install Canary from the Testing Clients article.
  3. Sign in to Canary with the same Discord account.
  4. Use Canary to try new features and Stable for anything that must work.
  5. Close Canary fully before you troubleshoot Stable, so you know which client is causing a problem.

Discord calls Canary the most unstable version, with lots of updates, so treat it as a second client for testing rather than your only one.

How to check which Discord version you are using

  1. Open Discord and select the gear icon in the bottom-left corner to open User Settings.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the settings list.
  3. Read the client info shown in the bottom-left corner.
  4. Select the version text to copy it, and paste it into any bug report.
  5. In a browser, check the address bar: canary.discord.com is Canary, ptb.discord.com is PTB and discord.com is Stable.

On mobile, Discord shows the app version under Developer Settings after you turn on Developer Mode.

What features appear in Discord Canary?

Discord does not publish a feature list for Canary. The build carries whatever Discord is testing at the time, and that changes with each update.

What to expect What not to expect
Features that have not reached Stable or PTB yet A promise that a test feature will ever ship
Design and layout changes before everyone else sees them The same look as your friends' Stable app
Frequent updates, often several close together Fewer bugs than PTB or Stable
The same account, servers, friends and messages A separate Canary account

A feature can appear in Canary, change, and then disappear again. That is normal for an alpha build, not a sign that the install is damaged.

Common problems with Discord Canary and how to fix them

Discord Canary will not open

A Canary process is stuck in the background, or an update left the install broken.

  1. Right-click the Discord Canary icon in the system tray and quit it.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select any remaining Discord Canary process and select End task.
  3. Restart your computer and open Canary again.
  4. If it still fails, uninstall Canary and install a fresh copy from the Testing Clients article.

Discord Canary is stuck updating

Canary updates often, and an interrupted download can loop on the update screen.

  1. Quit Canary from the system tray (Windows) or press Command + Q (Mac).
  2. Turn off any VPN or proxy and reopen Canary.
  3. If the loop continues, uninstall Canary, restart the computer and install it again from Discord's link.
  4. Use Stable or canary.discord.com in a browser until the next Canary update lands.

Discord can't detect my mic, or audio, screen share or camera does not work

The wrong input device is selected, the operating system blocks access, or a test build bug affects voice.

  1. Open User Settings > Voice & Video and pick your microphone in Input Device.
  2. Select Let's Check under Mic Test and speak to confirm the level moves.
  3. Make sure Input Mode is not set to Push to Talk by accident.
  4. Allow Discord Canary to use the microphone and camera in your Windows or macOS privacy settings.
  5. For camera or screen share problems, turn off Hardware Acceleration under Voice & Video > Video > Advanced.
  6. If nothing works, test the same call in Stable; if Stable works, the fault is in Canary and worth reporting.

Canary looks different from regular Discord, or a feature disappeared

Canary carries test designs and features that Discord changes or removes between updates.

  1. Check that you are actually in Canary using the client info at the bottom of User Settings.
  2. Wait for the next Canary update, since test features often return or change.
  3. Switch to Stable or PTB if you need the standard layout back.

If the Stable app will not install either, fix a failing Discord install before you retry Canary.

How to report bugs from Discord Canary

Bugs you hit in Canary go through Discord's normal bug report form. Discord's invite-only Discord Testers program is currently closed to new members.

  1. Open User Settings > Voice & Video > Debugging and turn on Debug Logging.
  2. Reproduce the bug in Canary.
  3. Go back to Debugging and select Upload under Debug Logging.
  4. Copy your client info from the bottom-left corner of User Settings.
  5. Open the Discord support form at dis.gd/contact and choose Bug Reporting.
  6. Fill in a short description, numbered steps to reproduce, expected results, actual results and your client info.
  7. Attach a screen recording directly if the bug involves audio, video, screen share or a crash, then submit the form.

Payment problems, security issues and API bugs are outside the bug form; Discord's Unsupported Bug Reports article lists where those go.

How to uninstall Discord Canary

  1. Quit Discord Canary from the system tray or menu bar so no Canary process is running.
  2. On Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the Canary build of Discord in the list, select More (the three dots) and select Uninstall.
  4. On a Mac, open Finder, select Applications, and drag Discord Canary to the Trash.
  5. Empty the Trash to remove the Mac app permanently.
  6. On Linux, remove the Canary package with the same package tool you used to install it, or delete the extracted tar.gz folder.

Uninstalling Canary does not touch your account, servers or messages, and regular Discord keeps working.

Discord Canary FAQ

What is Discord Canary?

Discord Canary is Discord's alpha desktop build. It receives new features before PTB and Stable, updates more often than either, and is the least stable of the three. Discord publishes it for Windows, macOS, Linux and the browser at canary.discord.com.

What does Discord Canary do?

Discord Canary lets you use features Discord is still testing, before they reach the regular app. You chat, call and join servers with your normal account, but you accept more bugs in exchange for early access, and you can report what breaks.

Is Discord Canary safe?

Discord Canary is safe when you download it from Discord's own Testing Clients article or open canary.discord.com. It is an official Discord build, not a mod. The trade-off is stability: Discord says test builds are likely to contain bugs and are used at your own risk.

What is the difference between Discord and Discord Canary?

Regular Discord is the Stable build with the fewest bugs. Discord Canary is the alpha build that gets changes first and updates most often. Both connect to the same service, so your account, servers and messages are the same in each.

Is there a Discord Canary web version?

Yes. Open canary.discord.com in a supported browser and sign in with your Discord account to use the Canary build without installing anything. PTB has its own web address at ptb.discord.com, and Stable runs at discord.com.

How do I log in to Discord Canary?

Use your existing Discord account. Open the Canary app or canary.discord.com, then sign in with your email or phone number and password. Canary has no separate account or sign-up.

Can I download Discord Canary for Windows 11 and Windows 10?

Yes. Discord's Testing Clients article links a 64-bit Windows Canary installer, and Discord's apps need Windows 10 or later. The same installer and steps work on Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Should I download Discord Canary from GitHub or Reddit?

No. Discord distributes Canary through links on its own support site and discord.com. A copy from GitHub, Reddit or a download portal is not published by Discord, so you cannot be sure it has not been changed.

Why can't Discord detect my mic in Canary?

Usually the wrong input device is selected or your operating system blocks microphone access. Pick your mic under User Settings > Voice & Video > Input Device, run the Mic Test, and allow microphone access in Windows or macOS privacy settings. If Stable works and Canary does not, report it as a Canary bug.

Is Discord Canary free?

Yes. Discord Canary is a free download from Discord's own support site, like the regular app, and the browser version at canary.discord.com costs nothing either. Discord's free and paid plans belong to your account, not to the build you use.

Bottom line: should you use Discord Canary?

Use Discord Canary only if you want to see new Discord features first and can live with bugs; keep Stable for calls, streams and server work. Canary is official and free, but it is Discord's least stable build by design. Trying it in a browser at canary.discord.com, or installing it next to Stable, gives you early access without losing a client that works.
