Sneak Peek at Video Calls Support in Chrome Picture in Picture Mode

Till now Chrome’s Picture in Picture mode allows watching videos on top of other windows. Google is now, expanding the support to Video conferencing websites for Chrome browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome OS. This capability allows users to “mute/unmute the microphone, turn the camera on and off and Hang up the call” from the PiP window itself. You can take a sneak peek at the upcoming feature right here.

Picture in Picture mode is super useful to watch videos in a floating window on your screen.

Chrome offers options to mute and gets back to the origin video in a tiny window. You can even playback local video files in the Picture in Picture window on the Chrome browser. We’ve covered even ways to get into PiP in Chrome.

Google now wants users to handle online meeting calls from their browser’s PiP mode.

Test Video Call Controls in Picture in Picture Mode on Chrome

  1. Visit chrome://flags/#media-session-webrtc
  2. Enable the flag and restart the browser
  3. Ensure  Webcam and Microphone are connected to your computer, head to this Media Session Sample page
  4. Allow the page to access Microphone and camera
  5. Click on the Open camera and Toggle Picture in Picture
  6. Now if you hover over at the center of the PiP window, you’ll see options to Mute Microphone, Turn off Camera and Hang up a current video call.

Chrome team did the background work to add media session actions to Video conferencing websites.

We’re able to get Video conferencing media session sample work in the latest Chromium (not canary version).

You may have to wait a little while longer to see the feature in action.
