New Microsoft Edge in stable and pre-release versions asks your permission to install Media Router extension when you use the Cast feature for the first time in the browser.
Chrome comes with Google Cast built-in and allows to mirror tabs, media –audio and video — to another screen such as TV or other Chromecast supported devices.
For instance, to cast a tab in Chrome, click on the menu, and select Cast, and choose the device.
Getting started experience with Casting is not the same in Chromium-based Microsoft Edge.
it requires Media Router Extension to be installed which Microsoft Edge doesn’t come with, by default.
After installing Microsoft Edge, if you right-click on a page and select “Cast media to device” (you can also find the option under more tools in Edge menu),
You’ll receive a notification from Edge saying “An extension from Google is needed to support Chromecast and DIAL devices. Please restart the browser to install”.
Here, Edge is asking your consent to install Media Router extension from Google (in the background) for casting to work.
When you click “Restart” the extension will be installed from Chrome Web Store and it won’t appear listed along with other extensions on the edge://extensions page.
Note: To see the extensions installed in the new Edge browser, click on Settings and more icon and select Extensions.
To keep the invisible Media Router extension updated, at regular intervals, Edge sends update requests along with data about the Edge version to Chrome Web Store.
If you don’t want Edge to update Media Router extension by connecting to Chrome Web Store
1. Visit edge://flags page
2. Search for “Enable on-Demand Media Router Extension”
3. Select Disabled from the dropdown and restart the browser.
Note: The Edge on-demand router extension flag is exclusive to Edge, not available in the Chrome browser.
