Chrome to bring Tabbed Application Mode for PWAs

Progressive Web Application (PWA) installed from Chrome browser to get tabbed mode in version 78 to allow users to open more than one tab under the standalone window.

According to the bug, Tabbed application mode feature is “about having standalone app window with multiple tabs (containing separate documents inside the app scope) inside it”. The thing is PWA with tabs, will look more like a browser (check the below screenshot) than an app window, but won’t have URL bar and navigation button.

Tabbing application mode PWAs mock

Chrome 75 Canary already showing Visual indicator in Omnibox that site you visited is a PWA and can be installed with a single click. Google Chrome team member Matt Giuca, who proposed feature request to add a tabbed mode to installed applications, said on Github issue page that:

when compared with the browser, tabbed app window has title and icon of the app, new tab button, no Navigation buttons, and URL bar and the user would able to able drag tabs and can split them to separate application windows.

You can check the mock up  that showed at Blinkon above where multiple untitled documents opened in PWA in four separate tabs.

Google wants to bring this to Chrome 78 for Windows, Mac and Chrome OS, the priority for this feature set to 2.

Update: For better clarity, added picture from Slide showed at Blinkon.
