Windows 10 1803 to 1809 Upgrade disables built-in Administrator Account

If you’ve enabled built-in administrator account that was disabled by default in Windows 10 version 1803 and upgraded to version 1809, you’ll notice it gets disabled, Microsoft is aware of this and says they’re working on a resolution and promises to release a hotfix for affected users in January 2019.

If you don’t know, for security reasons, since Vista, Windows comes with built-in administrator account deactivated by default , useful if activated in instances where you need to access administrative account that was blocked, instead of reinstalling Windows you can use built-in in admin account then and repair the system.

And coming to the current article, the issue happens in below cases where

  • The built-in administrator account is active
  • Other account present that has administrator rights.

Microsoft says in this blog for version 18o3 users to either wait for a hotfix or sign in with a second administrative account and proceed for upgrade. If you’re already upgraded, activate built-in administrator account, on how to, check the below instructions.

Enable Built-in administrator account in Windows 10

1. Right click on Start, select Computer Management

2. Computer Management >Local Users and Groups > Users,

3. Right click on Administrator and select Properties

4. Uncheck ‘Account is disabled’.

Microsoft needs to fix a lot of bugs in Windows 10 October 2018 Update and the issue now happens after upgrade needs to consider as well.
