Google Chrome by default discards idle tabs after a certain amount of time when Memory Saver mode is enabled, Google is exploring providing options in Chrome Settings for users to configure a timer to choose or set inactive time for tabs from 5 to 10 minutes or to 1 day.
Chrome Memory Saver
Chrome is improving Memory Saver mode. The feature aims to reduce memory usage and enhance device battery life by discarding idle tabs.
Till now, Chrome decides when to apply a Memory saver to tabs, we also reported Google is working on giving more control over tab discarding.
To the latest, the company is working on a multi-state option for the Memory Saver Mode. When enabled, memory savers pick the options from enabled with heuristic mode, enabled with fixed timer, and disabled. Users will be able to configure these options through settings.

But before this, in the preview version of Chrome (canary) user needs to activate the multi-state mode flag, for that,
- Visit chrome://flags in the Chrome browser
- Type “multi” in the search box and press enter,
- Locate the “Enable the multi-state option for Memory Saver Mode” option

- select “Enabled” and restart Chrome.
How to change the inactive time for Tabs Memory Saver Mode in Chrome
- Click on the menu icon in Chrome and select Settings
- Select “Performance”
- Select “Select when your tabs become inactive”
- Choose from 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes till 1 day.
From now on, Chrome will activate the Memory Saver mode when tabs remain inactive for the specified time period you’ve set above.
That’s not all, you can able to exclude certain sites in tabs from always being active by manually adding them or you can also disable Memory Saver mode if you found it not worth it.
