Microsoft details Context Menu changes in Windows 11

Windows 11 Update is recently available to insiders with new UI and improvements. Apart from the Start Menu, centered taskbar, Snap layouts, and other design changes, even though the new Context menu looks beautiful with  Acrylic material, it is somewhat controversial. Microsoft in a blog post talked about changes that drove them to simplify and redesign the menu in Windows 11.

The context menu is mostly used for File and folder operations in Windows, and it is mostly used shell extension, says Microsoft.

Context menu in Windows 10 and Windows 11 compared

When compared with Windows 10 context menu, Microsoft made these changes in Windows 11.

  1. Common commands such as copy, paste, delete and rename are easier to reach. In fact, they appear on top when opened.
  2. Open and “Open with” are grouped together where they are far apart in the previous version of Windows.
  3. App extensions are grouped together below shell verbs.
  4. Since you’re new to Windows 11, the company has kept Windows 10 context menu inside the new menu.
  5. The old context menu appears when you hover over “Show more options” or you can invoke it by using keyboard Shortcut Shift +F10.

Note: Microsoft may eventually remove the old Context menu as new context menu usage and adoption increase.

Microsoft also notes the Context menu in Windows 10 is unusually long and has grown unregulated since Windows XP with the introduction of IContextMenu.

The Redmond firm has done the work and you can see the changes in the above pic.

Until developers add their App options to the new Menu, users need to browse the old context menu.

The company also shared about improvements to the Share dialog in the new OS. You can check them here.
