Windows 10 1903 will remove Problematic Updates to recover system from Startup failure

If your Windows 10 device is not starting properly and stuck in an automatic recovery loop, then in that situation as a last resort Windows 10 will automatically uninstall the recently installed updates to see it fixes the issue, if your device starts up then you’ll see the notification about it.

March 14, 2019 update: MS updated the support document to say that this will happen in Windows 10 version 1903. At the moment the feature is available for insiders running 18351 or later builds.

Windows 10 removed updates to recover from startup failure

Windows Automatically install updates to ensure your device runs smoothly, having said that, some updates do cause performance and stability issues.

For instance, the driver update installed by Windows Update in the past caused Windows Audio to stop functioning and Cumulative update released for March 2019, KB4482887 triggered performance issues to Windows 10 when playing games such as Density 2. These are two examples where updates could go wrong and cause issues to your system.

Windows 10 to automatically uninstall recently installed updates on its own

Ahead of Patch Tuesday, Microsoft has readied a new support document page that reveals the information on “Why were recently installed updates removed?” notification and guides you to KB4492307 support page for more info. Btw, here is what the notification reads “We removed some recently installed updates to recover your device from a startup failure.”

In a helpless situation, If your computer running Windows 10 stuck in a loop to fix startup issues, Windows 10 jumps in behind the scenes and removes recently installed updates. After that, it will show a notification conveying recently installed updates were deleted to recover from startup failure.

Do note, you can also manually install updates including drivers and hotfixes from Microsoft Update catalog, MS offers more info on that in this support document.

Microsoft made this clear that “If your device is unable to start up properly after automatic or manual installation of these updates, Windows will uninstall them again”.

Windows ensures updates removed this way won’t be installed automatically for the next 30 days. in the meantime, Microsoft investigates the failure and fixes any issues and Windows will try to install those again.

With this news, MS has taken permission to remove updates from your computer, so don’t get surprised if this happens to you.
