Finally, Mozilla has added Google’s WebP image support to Firefox browser in version 65 and we’ve tested and can confirm the browser on Nightly version has displayed WebP images without any issues. A bug created two years back to add support for the WebP image format has been fixed and the target set as Firefox 65 for this.
For the uninitiated, in 2010, Google has developed a new image format for the Web, WebP that offers lossy and lossless compression, it has been advertised as a replacement to JPEG, PNG, and GIF.
Google claims ” WebP Lossless images are 26% smaller in size compared to PNG, WebP lossy images are 25-34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality index”.
Test WebP Support in Firefox
- Ensure you’re using Firefox 65 Nightly
- Visit about:config and change this preference value to true

3. Head to WebP Gallery page, where WebP images on the right side of the page will now load, which was not the case with the current and earlier versions of Firefox.
Till now, Chrome, Opera, Pale Moon, and Edge are WebP supported browsers, now Firefox has joined them. If you don’t know, you can also view WebP image on Windows by downloading and installing WebP codec for Windows.
Note: Microsoft has recently added WebP support to the Edge browser in Windows 10 October 2018 Update version 1809.
