
Recent versions of Chrome and Edge aren’t opening to some users. OfficeScan agent in Trend Micro security Product s blocking these apps and preventing them from running. This has been acknowledged by the Security vendor and promised they’ll release a fix soon. Meanwhile, if you’re using Trend Micro and affected, a workaround is available to unblock and run Edge 87 and Chrome 87 like before.
TrendMicro Antivirus blocks running of Edge 87 and Chrome 87
What you need to know:
- Some users reported Edge 87 doesn’t launch when they try to open it
- “TrendMicro OfficeScan Agent XG” is causing the issue
- Adding affected applications to Trusted Programs in “Behavior Scan” will fix the issue
- Trend Microsoft says they’re investigating the user reports and release a fix soon
Web browsers affected:
- Microsoft Edge 87.0.664.52
- Google Chrome 87.0.4280.88
Trend Micro confirmed in a support article (Japanese) the following products have this issue
- VirusBuster Corporate Edition XG
- VirusBuster Business Security
Fix
What you should do:
- Update the Trend Micro Antivirus and see if it fixes the issue
- Add Edge and Chrome if affected, to trusted programs list in Behavior Scan
To add any program to the Trusted Programs list in Virus Buster Corporate Edition:
- Go to Client > Client Management.
- In the client tree, click the root domain icon to include all clients, or select a specific domain or client.
- Click Settings > Trusted Programs List.
- Enter the full path of the program that you want to exclude from the search.
- Click Add to Trusted Program List.
To add any program to the trusted program list with Virus Buster Business Security:
- Go to Devices.
- Select the target computer group, and then click Policy Settings.
- Click Trusted Programs.
- Enter the full path of the program that you want to exclude from the search.
- Click Add to Trusted Program List.
- Click Save.
Usually, below are the paths of Edge and Chrome you need to add in the above steps in the respective Trend Micro editions
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe”
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe”

Microsoft is investigating the issue. Since this is external software impacting Edge, the issue should be fixed by Trend Micro rather than Edge.
