
Today, Microsoft introduced a screenshot tool in Edge. The Web Capture available only to a subset of users is now available to everyone in the Canary and dev channels. The company aims to fill the lack of Edge Legacy’s “web notes” with basic screen capture function in new Edge based on Chromium with the ability to add notes and take full-page screenshots.

Microsoft continues to work to bring features from Edge Legacy to the new Edge. Till now a slew of features has been ported, including for PDF Viewer.
When a feature is dated and needs improvement, Microsoft introduced new features for them in the new Edge. We can say Sidebar Search for Ask Cortana and Collections for the Reading list as examples.
The company replaced Ask Cortana with much better Collections, likewise, today, it announced the Web Capture screenshot tool for the new Edge to tell the Web Notes feature needs a lot of improvement.
How to use Web capture to take Screenshots on Edge
To get started, click on the ellipsis icon and select “Web Capture” or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S.
Use the Selection tool to capture the content. You can capture more content as you scroll down.
Once you select the region, you’ll notice two options: Copy and Preview.
Former lets you copy the image to the clipboard while Preview offers options to share and save the image to your computer.
If you want to access the tool more frequently pin it to the Edge toolbar.
For that,
- Click on Settings and more > Settings > Appearance
- Enable the “Show web capture button”.
UPDATE September 03. 2020: As promised, Microsoft has added an annotation feature to Edge’s Web Capture and is currently under A/B testing.
To add notes to a screenshot in Edge
- Launch Edge browser
- Click on “Settings and more”
- Select Web Capture (Ctrl+ Shift+S)
- Use the mouse pointer to select the region you want to capture and release,
- Click on “Add notes”
- Use “Draw” to write text. The Draw menu offers options to apply colors to text added on the screenshot. You can erase the content if you don’t like it.
- After finishing, use the options provided to share or save the screenshot locally to your computer.

Update October 23, 2020: Micorsoft Edge currently allowing to take full page screenshots.
To take a Screenshot of whole page in Edge
- Click on ellipsis icon and select “Web capture (Ctrl+Shift+S) or click on Web Capture icon on the toolbar
- When the “Free Select” and “Full Page” offered, select the latter
- Add notes if you want, Click save or share with others.
When compared with Edge Legacy’s Web Notes, Web capture is nothing, but it’s a good start none the less.
And Opera, Vivaldi, and Firefox have screenshot tool built-in, so here Microsoft can not brag this as a unique feature they building into the new Edge.
