Microsoft and Google have Fixed recent Edge Crashes

Microsoft Edge team has found the reason for Edge crashes that happened recently, they were able to mitigate the issue after Google rolled back the recent updates they pushed to their Search service.

A few days back, Edge started crashing to users (all channels affected) when they started typing the Omnibox. Microsoft team suggested to turn off search suggestions or change Search Engine from Google to Bing or use InPrivate window, as the workarounds to make Edge work again.

Edge team after examining found an “unrecognized token in the search suggestion JSON was causing the Edge browser to crash when typing in the address bar with Google set as the default search engine”.

They contacted Google to know if they made any recent changes they’re aware of for Edge to affected like this. Google, after further analysis, found a recent update they rolled out to search service has triggered this and rolled it back.

“We reached out to our friends at Google to see if they knew of a change that could’ve affected this. After investigating they rolled back a recent update to Google’s search service to help mitigate the crash on the Edge” said Microsoft Edge Community manager, MIssy Quarry.

Microsoft has rolled out a fix to the stable version and recommends users to ensure they’re using the latest stable version 84.0.552.52. The company says updates to Beta and dev channels that address this issue will be delivered this week.

There you’ve it! Microsoft explained what happened.

Changes implemented on the Google search side triggered the issue and nothing to do with the Edge browser. How the search changes only affected Edge? But not the other browsers or Chromium or Chrome? Something Google needs to answer than Microsoft.
