Google is now rolling out a new Quick Settings menu to Gmail for users to make changes easily to email interface whether it could be changing inbox type, density, Reading pane position, or theme.
Till now to change the Gmail Inbox type you need to visit its Settings. And to change Gmail interface display density or theme you need to click on Gear icon and select relevant options.
Google has announced in G Suite updates blog that it is adding a new Quick Settings menu to ease out this forth and back switching between settings pain.
“We’re adding a quick Settings menu that helps you easily find and use different layouts, settings, and themes to make Gmail look and feel right for you”
The animation shared in the blog post confirms, the gear icon has been moved up from where it is now and placed in between Google Apps launcher and Support icons.
Clicking on Gear icon shows Quick Settings pane with link to full Settings on top with “See all Settings”.
In brief, Gmail’s Quick Settings Menu allows user to
- Change Density from Default to comfortable or compact
- Select a theme from displayed.
- Select inbox type and adjust Reading pane position
- Disable or enable the conversational view.

When an option is selected, the inbox will be updated immediately to reflect the changes.
When you click on Settings, you’ll now see different interfaces, inbox types, and display options alongside your real inbox. When an option is selected, the inbox will immediately update so you can compare choices and see how settings work in real time.
The feature has started rolling out on May 26 and could take up to 15 days to visible Gmail users.
