Microsoft Edge Chromium now available to download on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1

Microsoft Edge Insider Preview builds now available for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 devices, Canary version only for now, Microsoft promises to launch more reliable Dev build soon to these Windows editions.

Microsoft doesn’t want to limit their Edge browser to Windows 10 only, they want its reach to greater than Internet Explorer by making it available on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android platforms. Microsoft Edge Preview build already available for Windows 10 and Mac, Linux is coming soon, FYI, Chromium-based Edge already available on Android in Play Store.

Today Microsoft introduced Edge Canary Preview builds for Windows 7/8/8.1 and available on Edge insider website. here is how you can download them.

1. Visit Microsoft Edge insider homepage

2. Click on “More Platforms and Channels”, click on down arrow for Canary branch to notice download options.

3. Begin downloading older Windows edition you want.

Since Microsoft is ending extended support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020, and there are after users on it won’t receive security updates and patches, you can still use Microsoft Edge browser which doesn’t rely on Windows Updates, as it has its own built-in updater as Chrome has. There are chances this may delay users from upgrading to Windows 10.

The Microsoft Edge Chromium

  • comes with built-in  Translation feature powered by Microsoft Translator, Reading View
  • Supports installing Chrome extensions from Web Store
  • Offers Google, Bing (default), Yahoo and DuckDuckGo search engines.
  • Dedicated add-ons store available for Microsoft Edge insider, do checkout the extensions available there and install if you don’t find in Chrome Web Store.
  • Chrome’s Picture in Picture mode works in Edge also,
  • Some Google services or websites don’t work in Edge because it is not yet available to the public in a stable form.

    Why would MS make something to work on Win7 and/or Win8 when it is gearing everything towards dropping both systems…even the updates seem to break features on Win7 now? Wouldn’t have another browser from MS anyway. Wish I could uninstall IE but have to leave it on my Win7. Do Not plan on “upgrading” to Win10 but have been trying to figure out partitions so I can go to Linux gradually. Doubt many who still have Win7 will be switching anytime soon.
