Microsoft says Windows 10 1803 and before versions will receive a Notification to Update to v1809

Recently we’ve covered Microsoft on devices running Windows 10 version 1803 started showing notice to users to update to recent version of Windows 10 as version 1803 is nearing end of support, Software giant today updated a support document confirming users running Windows 10 versions 1507, 1511, 1607, 1703, 1709 and 1803 to expect to receive a notification to “Update to latest version of Windows 10”.

The company recommends users running the earlier versions of Windows 10 to update to Windows 10 1809 and provides instructions suggesting the notification can be prevented if they want.

If you’re running Windows 10 on your computer other than 1903 and 1809 versions, you’ll likely to receive a notification from Windows 10 Update Assistant. Here is how the notification looks on Windows 10 1803 with message

“One of the best features of Windows 10 is that it keeps getting better with every update. This PC is currently not running the latest and most secure version of Windows 10. This PC is running version 1803. The latest version is 1809” The notification dialog offers an “Update Now” and don’t update now ” buttons where clicking the former “can help you get the latest security enhancements and feature improvements. ”

You can check which version of Windows 10 you’re using by running the “winver” command in the Run dialog. The document which last updated on today (October 10, 2019) confirms the update notification will also be displayed by Windows Update assistant on some devices that have not installed the recent updates.

The Update KB4023814 is responsible for showing the update notification, it can be either listed in installed updates or appears as “Windows 10 Update assistant” in Programs and features if installed.

Windows 10 Update Assistant can be uninstalled by running the following command.

C:Windows10UpgradeWindows10UpgraderApp.exe /ForceUninstall

Or you can also prevent  Windows 10 from showing the notification by deleting the below folders.

C:WindowsUpdateassistant

C:Windows10upgrade

If you can’t remove these folders, open the task manager and kill the following processes if running.

UpdateAssitant.exe

Windows10UpgraderApp.exe
