Fix Mouse wheel scrolling not working in Firefox after v110 Update

If you’re using X-Mouse Button Control software on Windows to remap mouse buttons and noticed mouse wheel scrolling not working in Firefox 110 after updating, you’re not alone. Here is the fix.

mouse wheel scrolling not working in Firefox 110 X-Mouse Button Control

Yesterday, Mozilla released Firefox 110 with the ability to control third-party modules, import bookmarks and data from Opera and Vivaldi, and other features. Another crucial, new, and essential feature is GPU Sandboxing. Mozilla has enabled it in Firefox on Windows.

Mozilla has been testing GPU Sandboxing in the Firefox Nightly verison for some time.

But, the feature now affects mouse wheel scrolling where it just doesn’t work. This happens when you’ve installed X-Mouse Button Control and run it to assign some actions to mouse buttons.

Unfortunately, the program XMBC breaks page scrolling in Firefox, to fix this, you’ve to reconfigure it in XMBC rather than disabling GPU sandboxing in Firefox. Here is what you need to do:

Fix the Mouse wheel scrolling is broken in Firefox 110

  1.  Right-click on the X-Mouse Button Control icon in Notification Area
  2. Select Setup

  3. Click on Settings to open Global Settings
  4. In the Global Settings dialog window, under General

disable XMBC's make scroll wheel scroll under cursor setting
    X-Mouse Button Control Global Settings
  5. Uncheck “Make scroll wheel scroll window under cursor
  6. Click OK and click Apply. Close XMBC.
Now mouse wheel scrolling works on pages in Firefox without the need to refresh the page or restart the browser.

The current XMBC version 2.19.2 was released on May 2020.

The developer is expecting to resolve this conflict between Firefox GPU sandbox and X-Mouse Button control with version 2.20.

It can be released at any time.

Until then, XMBC users running Firefox need to follow the above-said workaround to keep the mouse wheel scrolling working.

Are you affected? Let us know in the comments below.

Summary: After upgrading to Firefox 110, users noticed the mouse wheel scrolling on all web pages is not working or is broken. The issue affects users running X-Mouse Button Control on Windows, we’ve covered a workaround that involves unchecking an option in XMBC Settings, just follow that, and your problem will be solved. Thank you for the effort and solution for the problem. Web development is constantly “work in progress”, and that’s understandable, but thanks to people like you, it’s less frustrating.
Keep on good work & may the force be with you 🙂

Thank you. That fixed the issue, I actually never expected to find a (quite elaborate) solution for that problem with a rather specific environment (how many people use x-mouse and how many of them Firefox?)

Thanks to the firefox devs contacting the XMBC dev (me) late last year, this was known and fixed (at least in the XMBC beta) already.

And whats more, Firefox/Mozilla noted it themselves, including the solution above, in the release notes (which I guess no one reads :))

What surprises me (to some extent) is how noisy this has been, as I had assumed that XMBC had a rather small community – not that I’m complaining! about the notice – any news is good news and all that!

You know, i would have been lost and most likely just have bought a new mouse without you help! Thank you, you saved me time and money!

Thank you! The correct answer, with a straightforward explanation of the fix and only the second suggestion I tried – this is rare.

This is the internet i miss! Searching for a random new bug in some software and finding the exact obscure constellation of software causing the issue and some blog reporting how to fix it all on the same day. Doesn’t happen very often these days.

Awesome! FF was making me think it was my extensions because mouse scrolling would work in troubleshooting mode with extensions disabled. However, it wouldn’t work if I just disabled the extensions, so I was skeptical. Glad I didn’t “refresh” Firefox and have to go through all the hassle of setting up my environment again. Thanks for the speedy and comprehensive post!

I’m only commenting because I’m stunned. The fact that the first thing I looked up when encountering a problem was the exact solution and was easy to implement is mind-boggling. Massive props

This was driving me crazy. I tried my mouse on another computer so I know it wasn’t the mouse. I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver multiple times. I though it was a Windows Update because Windows 10 updated a couple times yesterday. I though it wasn’t scrolling in any app until I realized it was just FireFox. Remembered that FireFox updated also yesterday. Added that tidbit to the google search and it brought me here. Whew. I was *this* close to reinstalling Windows.
Thank you for saving me from that.

You have won the internet! 2 minute search for this issue and it brought me here! Mouse wheel fixed! Yay! Thank you!

Thanks a lot! I’m just setting up a new PC environment with StartAllBack etc, and I figured I must have screwed sth up myself.

Thank you. Was trying to figure out what the problem was yesterday but didn’t think about a firefox update messing with X-button.

Like others, I’m shocked to find such a detailed guide for a such a specific issue. Thank you, this was driving me crazy!

Thanks a lot. I didn’t think the mouseX program might be the problem. so I just look at firefox settings and add=ons.

    Wow…

I just want to say, sometimes I love the internet. I didn’t actually expect to find a solution to this obscure problem on a (sorry, seemingly) obscure website ON THE SAME DAY a Firefox update broke something, haha.

This happens so rarely, it feels like a small miracle.
    Thanks!

This is a used software, the custom mouse settings, Firefox should have it in their testing setup and not release such breaking changes without at least adding a popup to tell the users what is the problem. And their are wondering why more people uses Chrome.

Even if i saw a thousand comments, i would still scroll to the bottom to say THANK YOU, because you made that happen.

As per the comments above – so grateful this was noted in dev, addressed and then kindly posted for those of us that didn’t go through the FF release notes 🙂

    Like others commented… Just Wow.

I’m in shock at how quickly this issue was resolved.
I’ve done troubleshooting on weird issues before and usually a web search fix
requires jumping down the rabbit hole at least a few times to find the right direction.

But with your exquisitely detailed article, which was the first clicked result, solving this
annoyance was faster than figuring out the problem in the first place.

    Thank you

That does fix it for the wheel itself, but alas it seems I will need to wait for the update to fix my side buttons – that are set to a defined scroll up and scroll down. I could map them to Page Up and Page Down, but it’s a little too much travel distance up and down the webpages for my needs.

Anyhoo, thanks for you hard work!

thank you so much! all i thought my mouse is broken! and wondered why only it is happening on firefox and chrome works fine! and yes, its amazing its day one and this issue has been located within xbutton control.

Ahhh, what a relief! That was IMMEDIATELY highly noticeable and frustrating. Suddenly we realize just how useful X-Mouse Button Control is! I hope disabling that item doesn’t have other undesirable issues.

This fix isn’t working for me. I’m running Windows 11 and have checked and unchecked several boxes suggested online. I’ve even installed the XMBC Beta v2.20 with no luck. I’ve tried reverting back to v2.19, restarting the PC etc. Still no scroll in Firefox. The strange thing is that it’s working fine on my Windows 10 PC with v2.19. This seemed to happen AFTER a Windows 11 update for me. Any suggestions for a fix would be appreciated.

Thank you!!! That worked!! It’s so amazing when one helps everyone with what he is pro at. Best of luck to ya bro!!!

Can I be the 94th person to say Brilliant, Thanks and Bravo.

I thought I had a problem on my main machine – it hadn’t dawned on that it might be a firefox problem, when the update broke my laptop I realised.

Slightly bothered to hear the ff people knew about it and chose not to put the info on the update screen…

No I don’t read the release notes, there are so many updates to ff that I wouldn’t have time to work if I had to read every one.

    Thanks again guys…

    Chris
