The recently released October Cumulative Update for Windows 10 2004 (KB4579311) as Part of Patch Tuesday is failing to install consistently, and more issues reported by users who installed it. There are several reports on the Answers forum and Feedback Hub about the issues.
Here is what you need to know:
- Windows Update fails to install KB4579311 with an error for some users
- Manual download and install from Microsoft Catalog update, also triggering an error
- The update is causing sign-in and freezing issues. Desktop turns to black after startup. USB network printer problems also reported.
- Explorer crashes in a loop after login and becomes unresponsive, sometimes.
October 2020 Security update comes with improvements and bug fixes.
Generally, some users face issues in installing Windows 10 cumulative Updates. It is also happening now, but there is an increasing number of reports [1] [2] [3] about this.
Windows Update shows a generic error code to troubleshoot (0x800f0988) on why the update not installed.
Some received two types of errors for this:
- “There were some problems in installing the Updates, but we’ll try again later”.
- “Some update files are missing or having problems. We’ll try to download the update again later. Error code (0x8007000d)”.

Downloading the update from Microsoft Update Catalog, also not helped as users received “some updates were not installed “while installing KB4579311.

“I’ve tried to install this update a dozen+ times now through both Windows Update and a manual download. The update fails every time without reason. I’ve had zero issues ever installing an update on this laptop. Any help would be appreciated, I have followed all kinds of procedures to fix Windows Update, etc, but it seems the actual update is failing for some reason. I’m baffled.”
Users who installed October Patch also reported they can’t log in to Windows 10, HDMI port problem (that was fixed with a system store), black screen on startup.
The most commonly reported problem among these is the update is failing to install with Windows Update and manual download.

You should not be uninstalling a security update unless you have a major problem with it. If you intend to restore the system to a working state.

I am afraid you need to repair Windows 10 installation. Run the media creation tool and select Upgrade this PC. That will do.
