Firefox 70 now Shows Grey Lock for HTTPS Sites instead of Green

After moving EV indicator out of URL bar, Mozilla has made the lock icon which Firefox shows for HTTPS sites in identity block to appear in “grey” color instead of “green”. This is an experiment and the change is enabled by default in Nightly, if you like to see Green lock in the address bar and in the identity popup again, you can by following instructions given below.

Current Firefox in Nightly, displays insecure icon for HTTP sites in the browser, recently another change has been taken place in regards to security indicators is Mozilla has changed the way Firefox browser displays Extended Validation certificate information in the browser, starting version 70, the browser will show the EV info in identity popup, but not in the URL bar.

Google also planned to not show EV indicator in the address bar by default in Chrome 77, the indicator will appear in Page info UI. Chrome has already said goodbye to secure text and green lock icon, the browser now shows grey lock on HTTPS sites by default, the change happened a year back. Current Mozilla’s move may have come from them.

To see green lock again for HTTPS Sites in the address bar in Firefox browser

1. Visit about:config

2. Search for gray, and in the highlighted results, click the “Toggle” button for the below preference

Restart the browser or reload the active HTTPS website to see the green lock icon.
