Ad-Aware to go toolbar-free, Lavasoft has launched the beta version of Web Companion application, which to replace that. Lavasoft to say goodbye to its Ad-Aware Security Toolbar and it has newly launched Web Companion application for Windows, which is currently in beta, and to offer same security features as of its toolbar. This app offers protection for Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer browsers.

Once installed, Web Companion, which was powered by Lavasoft Malware URL Blocker, sits in the taskbar and warns when you’re about to visit a malicious website (check its warning screenshot below) or dangerous URL. When that happens, you can click on ‘Back to Safety’ button or ‘Continue to site’ at your own risk which may infect or harm your computer.

You can easily turn on/off ‘Web Protection’ or ‘Malicious URL blocking’ by accessing respective Settings from Web Companion icon in the system tray.

This app offers settings to manage default browser’s homepage and search provider.

Lavasoft Web Companion

Though standalone Web Companion is going to replace Ad-Aware toolbar and offer web Protection, let me tell you, it can work with any antivirus. You don’t need to be using Ad-Aware to use this.

Update: Web Companion is out of beta and available for public use.
