Your Terraria download for Windows 11, Windows 10, Mac or Linux comes from Steam or GOG, where one $9.99 purchase covers all three desktop systems. Steam installs it through its client, and GOG also hands you a standalone installer for each system.
Terraria is a paid game on every platform. The iPhone, iPad and Android editions are sold separately for $4.99 each, and the free tModLoader add-on on Steam adds mod support to a copy you already own.
This guide covers which copy to buy, the official store links, install steps for Steam and GOG, the Mac options, system requirements, multiplayer fixes and how to remove the game.

Which Terraria download do you need?
Match your device to a row. Every desktop row ends with the same game from Re-Logic.
| Your device | What to get | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC | The Steam copy, $9.99 | Terraria on Steam |
| Any PC where you want an installer file you can keep | The GOG copy, $9.99, with a standalone installer | Terraria on GOG |
| Mac | Either store; both sell a macOS build | Terraria on Steam |
| Linux PC or Steam Deck | The Steam copy, which includes the Linux build | Terraria on Steam |
| iPhone or iPad on iOS 13 or later | The mobile edition, $4.99 | Terraria on the App Store |
| Android phone or tablet | The mobile edition, $4.99 | Terraria on Google Play |
| Xbox console | The console edition from 505 Games | Terraria on Xbox |
The Xbox listing in the Microsoft Store is a console package only. It does not install on a Windows PC.

- Open the Terraria GOG page and buy the game.
- Sign in to gog.com and open your games library.
- Select Terraria to open its download options.

- Run the downloaded installer and follow its prompts.
- Launch Terraria from the shortcut the installer creates.
The Windows installer is 696,254,464 bytes, about 664 MB. The Mac file is about 625 MB and the Linux file about 623 MB.

Which Terraria download do you need for your Mac?
Open the Apple menu and select About This Mac to read your macOS version first.
| Your situation | Get | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want saves synced through Steam Cloud | Steam macOS build | One purchase covers the Mac, Windows and Linux builds |
| You want an installer you can archive | GOG macOS installer | GOG lists OS X 10.11 or later |
| You want to play on an iPad | App Store edition | A separate $4.99 purchase that needs iOS 13 or later |
| You want mods on a Mac | tModLoader on Steam | Free; the 1.4.4 branch lists macOS 12 Monterey |
Steam’s Mac requirements still name OS X 10.9.5 to 10.11.6. GOG’s listing gives OS X 10.11 or later as the floor.
Is Terraria free?
No. Terraria costs $9.99 on Steam and on GOG, and the phone editions cost $4.99 on the App Store and Google Play. The desktop copy is one-time and covers Windows, Mac and Linux on the same account. Updates such as 1.4.5 Bigger & Boulder arrive at no charge. The only free Terraria download on Steam is tModLoader, and it needs the paid game to run.
The two soundtrack add-ons cost $4.99 each on Steam. Neither is needed to play.
Should you install Terraria or tModLoader first?
Install Terraria first and play it unmodded. Add tModLoader later only if you want community mods. tModLoader is a separate free Steam app that runs alongside the base game. Players on tModLoader cannot join players on the unmodded game, so your whole group has to pick the same one. It also asks for more: 6 GB of RAM and the .NET 8 runtime on Windows.
How to check your Terraria version and update it
Steam patches the game automatically. GOG installs stay on the version you installed until you replace the installer.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Terraria and choose Properties.
- Open the Updates tab and set automatic updates to keep the game current.
- Restart Steam if an update shows as queued.
- On GOG, open your library and read the version printed next to each installer.
- Download the newer installer when that number is higher than yours, and run it over your install.
Re-Logic posts each patch and its changelog on the Steam news page. The 1.4.5.7 balance update reached PC on August 19, 2026, ahead of console and mobile.

| Terraria mobile | $4.99 | iPhone and iPad, or Android, bought per store | App Store |
| tModLoader | Free | Mod support for a copy you own | Steam |
Buy the 4-Pack only if three friends will play with you. It costs less than four single copies.
