Mozilla is looking to integrate its Password Manager Lockbox available for Android and iOS into desktop Firefox as well with name Firefox Lockwise. The HTML-based login manager is now available behind a about:config pref in Nightly and can be enabled and used, do note the feature is still in development and Firefox team will polish the login manager page UI as they work on.
Enable Firefox Lockwise in Nightly
1. Ensure you’re using latest Firefox Nightly, visit about:config
2. Find the pref signon.management.page.enabled
and change its value to “true”.
3. Restart Firefox browser and visitabout:logins
page to see new Firefox Password manager Lockwise live.
Using Lockwise in Firefox:
To use Lockwise to manage passwords in Firefox,
1. Click on menu > Options > Privacy and Security
2. Under “Logins and passwords”, ensure the below settings are selected
- Ask to save logins and passwords for websites
- Use a master password.
When prompted for master password setting, type a password that you can remember, this is master password, the key to access and manage all logins in Firefox browser, you shouldn’t be forgetting this.
Now whenever you visit a website and enter login credentials, Firefox asks to save login details, allow. From next time, Firefox auto fills username and passwords for those websites when you visit, which you can manage by visiting about:logins page.
The page allows seeing usernames, passwords and website addresses stored by Lockwise and lets you make changes to them. You can launch the respective website and copy or modify username and passwords using the options provided in the page.
Sometime back Mozilla added “logins and passwords” option to Firefox hamburger menu, it is for Lockwise purpose, which now displays saved logins information.
While we’ve found this information on our own, from Bleepingcomputer we came to know Mozilla has plans to turn Lockbox and Firefox Monitor into commercial features and make money from them and offering an experimental and will conduct a study in Firefox 67 and later versions by installing an add-on, you can install Lockwise extension hosted on Github page here. The extension has some known issues and requires master password needs to be disabled before installing the extension for it to work.
Its up to you decide to use built-in Firefox Lockwise login manager or use the signed extension available on Github.
