Microsoft publishes AV1 Video Codec for Windows 10, available on Store for download

Microsoft has released an early beta version of AV1 Video extension for Windows 10 and is available on Microsoft Store for download. With Chrome 70 and Vivaldi 2.1 already support AV1 codec format and you can enable support for same in YouTube also. By installing AV1 Video app, you can able to play downloaded AV1 videos without any issues in App such as Movie & TV on your computer.

AV1 Video Extension (beta)

Since the extension is in the early stage, Microsoft warns you might experience performance issues while playing AV1 videos. The company says, they are improving it and recommends users to let apps update themselves automatically so that users can benefit from the latest updates. Right now unless you have got a bunch of AV1 transcoded Videos available on your computer, installing the app has no use.

After installing AV1 Video extension, to test it, we’ve downloaded a AV1 video and it played perfectly in Movie & TV app on Windows 10 1809, no, you don’t need to be an insider or using an insider build to install this app, but you need to be signed into Microsoft Account to download the app from Store. Watch AV1 videos in Chrome

If you’re using latest Chrome, visit Youtube.com/testtube and enable AV1 support, then visit this AV1 Beta launch playlist page and start playing some clips, while a clip is playing, check stats for nerds to know videos are playing with AV1 codec are not.
