Fix Malwarebytes 3.0 installation’s mbae64.sys error

Last updated on December 9, 2016 By Venkat

Final version of Malwarebytes 3.0, the next generation antivirus replacement has been officially released and available for download. When you try to install this version over Malwarebytes anti-malware, Malwarebytes 3 installation fails as the installer couldn’t delete mbae64.sys file to replace it with a new one and triggers an error that tells user to retry or ignore or abort to cancel the installation, clicking retry doesn’t helps, let us see how we can fix this issue.

Fixing Malwarebytes 3.0 installation’s mbae64.sys error

Here is the error:

‘C:\Windows\system32\drivers\mbae64.sys

An error occurred while trying to replace the existing file: DeleteFile failed: code 5 Access is denied

Click Retry to try again, ignore to skip this file (not recommended) or abort to cancel the installation. ‘

Here is how you can install Malwarebytes 3.0 on your computer after receiving the above error

  1. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\drivers
  2. Find mbae64.sys, right click and select rename, and change it to mbae64.old
  3. Now try to install new Malwarebytes, it will be installed without any issues.

Yep, you can. That won’t cause any issues, leaving it won’t harm your computer also.

So my pc won’t let me change the name of the file, it says I require administrator permission. I am pretty certain that I am an administrator…

Restart your computer, ensure you’re running as admin and try to rename the file again to see it fixes the issue.

I tried this too. I am the only user on this new laptop and it won’t allow me any admin permissions. I have been trying to remove the malwarebytes files and re-download it for days now.

Windows is telling me that the file cannot be deleted. This is happening after a restart.

I am also an administrator, the file can’t be removed :/

I’m so tired of these installation problems, you’d think they’d have it down to a science by now.

I also have the “need administrator permission” problem and restart is not helping. Please advise

Try to run MBAM cleanup tool and then attempt to install Malwarebytes 3.0 again. https://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mbam_clean

Perfect. Googled and found your answer. Worked on two corrupted systems I was trying to fix.

Can’t rename, can’t delete, and that “MBAM cleanup tool” mentioned here didn’t do anything either – mbae64.sys still is there and it cannot be changed in any way.

I had the same issue with the file being protected and couldn’t delete or rename it. I am on Windows 10 and had to reboot into Diagnostics mode (hold shift down while you select restart the computer) and selected command prompt under advanced options. The default X: drive is not your C: drive. My C: drive was mapped as D: in the maintenance prompt. I switched to D: and then changed to the drivers folder listed in the error and typed DEL MBAE64.SYS and it deleted fine. A reboot and the Malwarebytes install worked fine.

Saw a few other suggestions that require restart and downloading rootkit tools etc., this was simple and fixed the issue with no problem and no need to restart my PC. Thank You.

Tried the MBAM cleanup tool – didn’t work. Tried removing / renaming the file in diagnostics but it wasn’t visible. Then went back into W10, tried deleting it, but it still wouldn’t allow me (even though I’m an administrator), but then tried renaming it again – and to my surprise it worked. Now after renaming it, I have been able to delete it.
