Finally! Windows 11 gets Tabs Support for File Explorer, how to Enable

After acting on most requested features like drag and drop support for the taskbar and the ability to display the clock on multiple monitors, seems Microsoft has finally addressed the demand for Tabs in File Explorer on Windows 11 albeit in insider preview build 22572. The feature is hidden by default in Windows 11 22H2, here is how you can enable it.

Users have been accustomed to using tabs in a Web browser. For a long time, there has been a huge request from Micorsoft Community and Windows users to bring tabs to File Explorer.

Microsoft has experimentally tested Tabs for Explorer in Windows 10 with the name “Windows Sets”. The feature had brought tabs to other apps in Windows, including Explorer. The company had dropped it later.

Windows 11 build 22572

  • Microsoft has released the latest Preview build for Windows 11 with two inbox apps, Microsoft Family and Clipchamp.
  • The company promised it will roll out a new search experience for Windows 11 called “Search Highlights” next week.
  • Microsoft also made Microsoft Defender Preview available for insiders in the U.S.
  • Windows insiders running the latest Preview build 22572 have a chance to test and see the Tabbed File Explorer interface in Windows 11.

How to enable Tabs for File Explorer in Windows 11

  1. Visit Github and download ViveTool
  2. Extract its files to a folder
  3. Open command as administrator
  4. Copy and paste previously extracted ViveTool folder path in Command window and run the following command
  5. vivetool addconfig 34370472 2
  6. Close the command dialog and restart your computer

If you now Open Explorer and right-click on one of the folders, you’ll notice the “Open in new tab” option, use it to open multiple folders and drives.

To restore the default File Explorer without Tabs, replace step 5 in the above instructions with the following command

vivetool delconfig 34370472 2

Note: Microsoft hasn’t officially announced Tabbed Explorer. This may or may not be available with Windows 11 22H2 feature update in the future.
Clarification: By releasing a recent cumulative update for Windows 11 insider preview in the Dev channel Microsoft indicated their next feature update for Windows 11 could be version 22H2.
