Google has quietly updated its default search engines in the Chrome browser to include “Ecosia”. In Chrome 81 canary/dev, If you now visit Settings and try to choose a search engine from the available for the address bar, you’ll notice newly added Ecosia at last position along with Google, Bing, Yahoo, and DuckDuckGo. The search engine addition can be spotted in the new Edge Canary build also.
Seems as if Google will update Chrome’s default search engines (DSE) list every year (and the company calls it internally as DSE refresh), they’ve done it for the year 2018 and for 2019 now (DSE Refresh 2019) to the latest.
For the uninitiated, Ecosia, uses the revenue it gets from users’ searches to plant trees. The search engine results are powered by Microsoft Bing and its Ecosia algorithms. You can also see this search engine available in the Vivaldi browser as one of the default search engines.
Here is how Ecosia works: You search the web with their search engine, the search ads displayed to users creates revenue for them, which the company, in turn, uses to plant trees.
To set Ecosia as the default search engine in Chrome browser
1. Launch Chrome browser
2. Click on the menu and select Settings
3. Click on Search engine, click on down arrow and select Ecosia
You can also achieve the same by installing its extension available in Chrome Web Store. Do note Ecosia extension also changes Chome’s new tab page, if installed.
As of now with this change, in India, Chrome is offering the following search engines:
- Bing
- Yahoo
- DuckDuckGo
- Ecosia
