You can install Google Slides as a desktop app on Windows 11, Windows 10 and Mac in about a minute, straight from Chrome or Edge. It gets its own window and taskbar icon, so a deck opens without hunting through browser tabs.
Slides is free with a Google Account. Google Play and the App Store carry the official apps for Android, iPhone and iPad.
Below: the right route for each device, Google’s official links, installing on Windows and Mac, presenting offline, PowerPoint files, and fixes for a deck that will not open.

Which Google Slides download do you need?
Match your device to a row. On a computer, the app installs out of the browser you already have.
| Your device | What to install | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC | Google Slides, installed as an app in Chrome or Edge | No separate download |
| Mac | Google Slides, installed as an app in Chrome | No separate download |
| Android phone, tablet or Chromebook | Google Slides on Google Play | Play states no size |
| iPhone or iPad | Google Slides on the App Store | 404.7 MB |
| A laptop that must present with no Wi-Fi | Google Docs Offline extension | 157 KiB |

Download Google Slides from Google’s official sources
Google publishes Slides at these addresses. A site offering a Slides .exe is wrapping a window around the same website, so skip it.
- Google Slides on the web — sign in with a Google Account, then install it as an app
- Google Slides on Google Play — Google LLC, 1B+ downloads, updated 22 September 2026
- Google Slides on the App Store — 404.7 MB · iPhone and iPad, iOS 17.0 or later
- Google Docs Offline for Chrome and Edge — 157 KiB · one extension covers Slides, Docs and Sheets
- Google Drive for desktop — 277.7 MB · syncs Drive files to File Explorer or Finder

Check the Google Slides system requirements
Slides sets no hardware floor of its own. The browser sets it, and a deck with large images leans on memory rather than the CPU.

How to install Google Slides on Windows 11 and 10 as a desktop app
Chrome turns Slides into a windowed app with its own taskbar icon. It opens with no tabs and no address bar, which matters when you present with the window on a projector.
- Open Chrome and go to docs.google.com/presentation.
- Sign in with the Google Account that holds your decks.
- Select More, the three-dot button at the top right.
- Select Cast, save, and share, then Install page as app.
- Follow the on-screen prompt and select Install.
- Right-click the new window’s taskbar icon and select Pin to taskbar.
- Open Slides from the Start menu and confirm your presentation list loads in its own window.
Some pages show an Install icon in the address bar instead. It does the same job in one click.
Install Google Slides with Microsoft Edge instead of the Store
The Microsoft Store carries no Google Slides package, so Edge is the built-in route on Windows 11. It builds the same kind of app window Chrome does.
- Open Microsoft Edge and go to docs.google.com/presentation.
- Sign in to your Google Account.
- Select Settings and more, the three-dot button at the top right.
- Select More tools, then Apps, then Install this site as an app.
- Name the app and select Install.
- Open edge://apps, select Details on the Slides card, and choose Pin to taskbar or Create Desktop shortcut.
The same Details panel can start the app at sign-in, which suits a machine that lives in a meeting room.
Which Google Slides download do you need for your Mac?
Install Slides from Chrome on a Mac. The steps match Windows, and the app lands in the Dock and Launchpad.
| What you want | What to use | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Slides in its own window | Install page as app in Chrome for Mac | |
| A deck you can present with no connection | Google Docs Offline, then the Drive Offline setting | |
| Presentations synced to Finder | Google Drive for desktop | Google, macOS Ventura 13.0 or higher |
| Slides on an iPhone or iPad | Google Slides on the App Store, 404.7 MB | Apple App Store |

How to set up Google Slides offline before you present
Offline mode keeps a copy of the deck on the computer, so it opens and runs when the venue Wi-Fi fails. Edits sync the next time you connect.
Do this the day before, not in the room. The first sync needs a connection.
- Connect to the internet and use Chrome or Microsoft Edge in a normal window, not private browsing.
- Add Google Docs Offline and make sure it is turned on.
- Open Google Drive, select Settings at the top right, then Settings again.
- Turn on the Offline setting.
- On the Slides home screen, select More on the deck, then turn on Available offline.
- Wait for the checkmark, disconnect the network, and open the deck to confirm the slides render.
Inside an open presentation, the cloud status icon next to the title turns offline access on as well. Leave enough free disk space for the images in the deck.

How to open PowerPoint files in Google Slides and save a .pptx or PDF
Slides edits PowerPoint files directly, and it can convert them to Slides format. Embedded charts and videos become images, SmartArt becomes a Google Drawing, and macros do not carry over.
To hand a copy to someone else, open the deck and select File, then Download, and pick a file type.
| You need | Do this |
|---|---|
| To edit a .pptx someone sent you | Upload it to Drive and open it in Slides, which keeps the PowerPoint format |
| A deck for someone using PowerPoint | File > Download > Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx) |
| A read-only copy to email or print | File > Download > PDF Document (.pdf) |
| An older .ppt, .pps or .pot template | Convert it to Slides format, as only .pptx saves back to PowerPoint |
Google’s Office files help page lists every extension that converts, including .odp from Impress.
Should you install Google Drive for desktop or the Slides app?
Install Slides as an app from Chrome or Edge. Add Google Drive for desktop only if you also want presentations synced into File Explorer or Finder. Google ships no standalone .exe or .dmg for Slides itself, so the browser app is the desktop version, and the offline extension covers a room with no Wi-Fi. Drive for desktop is a real 277.7 MB installer, but it moves files rather than editing them. It needs 64-bit Windows 10 or later with Microsoft WebView2, Windows 11 and up on ARM64, or macOS Ventura 13.0 or higher, and there is no 32-bit or Linux build.
Is Google Slides free?
Yes. Google Slides costs nothing with a Google Account, on the web and on both phone stores. Every Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos, and files created or edited after 1 June 2021 count toward that total. A handful of presenting features, including speaker spotlight and recording a presentation, sit on Google Workspace Business and Enterprise plans. A site charging for a Slides installer is selling a file Google does not make.
How to update Google Slides and restore an older version of a deck
Slides on the web carries no version number to check. Google updates it on the server, so the browser always loads the current build.
- On Android, open Google Play, select your profile picture, then Manage apps & device, and update Google Slides.
- On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, select your profile picture and update Slides from the list.
- On a PC or Mac, keep Chrome or Edge current instead.
- To recover slides you deleted yesterday, open the deck and select Last edit at the top right.
- Choose an earlier version in the right panel.
- Select Restore this version, then Restore.
The App Store listed version 1.2026.38102 on 21 September 2026. Restoring an earlier version needs edit permission on the file.
How to check a Google Slides download really came from Google
An .exe or .dmg named Google Slides did not come from Google. Check anything you are about to open against these points.
- Read the address bar before signing in. Slides runs at docs.google.com, and sign-in happens at accounts.google.com.
- On Google Play and the App Store, confirm the publisher reads Google LLC.
- On the Chrome Web Store, confirm Google Docs Offline is offered by google.com.
- Right-click any file claiming to be Slides, open Properties, then Digital Signatures, and reject a signer that is not Google.
- Treat a .pptx arriving by email as a document, not an installer, and open it in Drive rather than running anything it offers.
Fix Google Slides not loading, not installing or not presenting
Google Slides will not load or keeps showing errors
Slides needs cookies, JavaScript and a recent browser version.
- Update the browser to one of its two most recent versions.
- Turn cookies and JavaScript back on in the browser’s site settings.
- Clear cached files and cookies, then reload docs.google.com/presentation.
- Turn extensions off one at a time to find the one blocking the editor.
The Install page as app option is missing
The menu item shows only on a regular Chrome tab displaying the site.
- Leave Incognito or Guest mode and open a normal Chrome window.
- Update Chrome, then reopen docs.google.com/presentation.
- Check chrome://apps in case Slides is already installed.
A deck will not open or present offline
Offline mode needs the extension, the Drive setting and one sync while you are still connected.
- Reconnect and confirm Google Docs Offline is installed and turned on.
- Confirm the Offline setting is on in Google Drive settings.
- Leave private browsing and use a normal Chrome or Edge window.
- Free up disk space, then mark the deck Available offline again and wait for the checkmark.
A converted PowerPoint deck looks wrong
Some PowerPoint objects have no direct equivalent in Slides.
- Expect embedded charts and videos to arrive as images, and SmartArt as a Google Drawing.
- Rebuild any macro as an Apps Script, because macros do not convert.
- Install the original fonts on the machine, or swap them for fonts the theme already uses.
- Keep the .pptx in PowerPoint format instead of converting, if the layout has to survive exactly.
How to uninstall Google Slides from a PC or Mac
Removing the app removes the window and its shortcuts. Your presentations stay in Google Drive.
- Open the Google Slides app window in Chrome.
- Select More at the top right, then Uninstall Google Slides.
- Tick Also delete data from Chrome if you want the local copy gone, then select Remove.
- In Edge, open edge://apps, select Details on the Slides card, then Uninstall.
- To stop keeping decks on the computer, turn off the Offline setting in Google Drive settings.
Deleting a presentation is separate. In Drive, Move to Trash keeps it for 30 days, and Delete forever removes it at once.
Which presentation app to use instead of Google Slides
Slides suits decks that several people edit in a browser. Pick something else when the layout must match PowerPoint exactly, or when the room has no network at all.
| App | Publisher | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Slides | Free with a Google Account | Co-editing a deck and presenting from a browser window | |
| PowerPoint for the web | Microsoft | Free with a Microsoft account | Keeping a .pptx in its own format online |
| LibreOffice Impress | The Document Foundation | Free, open source | A desktop installer for Windows and macOS that never needs a connection |
