Don’t update Windows 10 to October 2018 Update or version 1809 Microsoft and Intel warns. Before doing that, check if your Intel graphics drivers are latest because Microsoft is blocking the feature update on devices having Intel Audio Display device driver (intcdaud.sys) with versions from 10.25.0.3 through 10.25.0.8. If you proceed to upgrade on these devices by forcing the update by manually check for updates or by using the media creation tool, you’ll be warned during the setup with “What needs your attention”.
Windows 10 Setup: What needs your attention – Intel Audio Display
Microsoft suggests to click ‘Back‘ (do not click ‘Confirm’) and stay on whichever version of Windows 10 you’re using when you receive the warning that Intel Audio Display (intcdaud.sys), KB4465877 ‘needs your attention to continue the installation and keep your Windows Settings, personal files, and apps’.
The Windows 10 setup dialog says “A driver is installed that causes stability problems on Windows. This driver will be disabled. Check with your software/driver provider for an updated version that runs on this version of Windows.”
Intel repeats the same information on their support page and says updating Windows 10 to version 1809 on the device having IntelĀ Audio Display driver with above-mentioned versions will result ‘in excessive processor demand and reduced battery life’.
The company confirms, the fix for the issue already included in Intel Display Audio driver version 10.25.0.10 that was bundled with Intel Graphics driver version 24.20.100.6286 and newer. You just have to check, you have this Intel Graphics version.
For that,
1. Right click on the desktop and select ‘Intel Graphics Settings’ to open Intel UHD Graphics Control Panel
2. Click on Options and Support, check driver version in Information center, it should report 24.20.100.6286.
There is always a reason for Microsoft to not to push Windows 10 October 2018 update to all devices, instead, they release the update to qualified devices that don’t have these issues. So no hurry and check your system drivers ares uptodate, then only upgrade or wait till Microsoft offers the feature update to your device via automatic updates.
Tip: Use Intel Driver and Support Assistant to update your Intel drivers.
